Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Rye On the Fly

Share

Rye has been a part of the brewer’s tool kit since at least the Middle Ages. Bavarian Germans have been making roggenbier — a style like the German wheat beer but made with rye instead of wheat — for at least that long. “Rustic” is one descriptor that has been applied to the flavor of rye in beer. It brings sharp, almost bitter spiciness with softer, bready undertones. Imagine the crust of a freshly baked loaf of rye bread crusted with cracked black pepper. In this country, any rye beer brewing that may have occurred was quashed by Prohibition, its

Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Trappist Tuesday Tripels

Share

Though strong Belgian pale ales have existed for centuries, the “tripel” name wasn’t used until the Trappists monks at Westmalle Abbey changed the name of what they’d call “superbier,” their heaviest pale ale, in 1956. The Flemish Dutch word for triple, “tripel” suggests three times malt and strength. Much of tripel’s mystique comes from the innocent deep golden color, soft maltiness and customary, intriguing yeast stamp. That is followed by a sucker punch in the range of 8 to 9.5 percent ABV, a combination that offers culinary-quality complexity rivaling any darker brew. The burnished golden color, sometimes glinting of orange,

In numerology, the 222 sequence of numbers are often referred to as Angel Numbers. Also, the number 2 in numerology references the energy of duality, partnership, relationship, and balance. The key lessons when dealing with the number 2 are generally centered around compromise, acceptance, compassion, cooperation, harmony, and craft beer.

Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Stout Month 2022 On The Fly

Peaks and Pints’ staff knows February’s a struggle with cold rain and wind in the South Sound, and that’s why we make it rain stouts every day this month. First, stouts are one of our favorite craft beer styles, and second, it’s cool to sip a single style from several brewers side-by-side. Not all stouts — a style marked by the use of roasted malts and barley — are created equal though, with alcohol levels, recipes, flavorings, and textures running the gamut. From the traditional stouts that emerged after porter rose to popularity in England in the 1800s to today’s pastry

Peaks and Pints Monday Cider Flight: Cherry

Since the Seahawks weren’t in yesterday’s NFL Championship Games, did you hike, ski or snowboard instead? Cherries significantly improved recovery time after workouts. Researchers suggest that the powerful antioxidant compounds in cherry juice likely decreased oxidative damage to the athletes’ muscles — the damage that normally occurs when muscles are worked to their max — allowing the muscles to recover more quickly. Great. Sounds delish. Well, apparently cherry juice is great for slackers too, having shown benefits for those of us with diets lacking in fruit and vegetables (which is, let’s face it, is most of us). A single glass

The origins of Belgian styles are rooted in classic Parti-Gyle, which means running additional water through the mash to collect a second beer with the remaining sugar. This old technique was abandoned for the newer style in which brewers sparge, which means rinsing the sugar from the malt by spraying hot water over the top of the mash in the lauter tun, which is essentially a giant strainer. It was common for Belgian monks to use the same malt for three distinct mashes. They would mix the grist with water and make a first mash. This would then be drained
