FRIDAY PREFUNK: Craft beer before The Comic Strippers and Mr. Burns

Share

FRIDAY, FEB. 24 2017: South Sound events + craft beer …

Broadway Center + Peaks and Pints = Chip and Quad

University of Puget Sound + BrewDad’s of Bonney Lake = Mr. Burns and Mr. Besser

MAGIC CHIPS

Six shirtless dudes named Chip, wearing nothing but tight black pants and colored bow ties breathe new life into standard improv games. And when music starts blaring, the guys start self-indulgently voguing to the beat. The Comic Strippers hit the Theatre on the Square stage at 8 p.m. The Comic Strippers is actually squeaky clean. This is not a show with comedians stripping; it’s improvisers playing fake male strippers putting on a comedy show. Expect dudes shooting ping-pong balls out of their mouths at the audience, a shower scene with water pistols, and, of course, the requisite private lap-dance segment.

PREFUNK: The Belgian quadruple is the strongest in a series of Trappist styles, beginning with the single (better known as an abbey), the dubbel (double) and the tripel (triple). Quads are the strongest of the Belgian beers, often over 10 percent ABV. Fish Brewing’s Reel Ales label will release its Belgian Quad in a couple weeks, but Peaks and Pints tapped it last night at our Fish Dick’s Lodge Meeting with Fish and Dick’s Brewing. This Belgian Quad (11%) fits the bull with a rich bold maltiness that combines with yeasty hints of raisin, dates, figs, grapes and plums for an alcoholic warmth and a complex sweetness, with wine and liquor-like characteristics. Drop by Peaks and Pints for an early taste.

POST-ELECTRIC PLAY

After the collapse of civilization, a group of survivors share a campfire and begin to piece together the plot of The Simpsons episode “Cape Feare” entirely from memory. Seven years later, this and other snippets of pop culture (sitcom plots, commercials, jingles, and pop songs) have become the live entertainment of a post-apocalyptic society, sincerely trying to hold onto its past. Seventy-five years later, these are the myths and legends from which new forms of performance are created. Mr. Burns, a post-electric play, turns an eye to the communal creation of myth by exploring a post-apocalyptic landscape at 7:30 p.m. in the Norton Clapp Theatre on the University of Puget Sound campus.

PREFUNK: Last summer, Mike Besser, also known as BrewDad, purchased NW Caps N Taps bottle shop and taproom in Bonney Lake. The popular craft beer joint along Highway 410 became BrewDad’s of Bonney Lake, with Besser at the helm filling growlers, popping bottle caps and serving hot dogs. Today, Mike Besser turns 50. And, he’s celebrating. Big. Top Rung Brewing, Green Flash Brewing, Puyallup River Brewing, North Jetty Brewing, Wingman Brewers, Hop Valley Brewing, Sumerian Brewing and Bainbridge Brewing will help blow out the candles and pour their beers beginning at 5 p.m. Stacks Burgers will help feed the masses.
