For the sixth consecutive year, Portland Beer Week promises to provide another welcome excuse to tipsily prove Portland’s superiority in consuming massive amounts of glutenful pints and apparently enjoy the longest week in the history of ever, June 9-19 (11 whole days, which makes said “week” technically closer to being a fortnight, guys). Some of the early specials include an official beer by Portland Brewing and Double Mountain Brewery, beer donut by Blue Star Donuts, beer ice cream from Salt & Straw and the return of the Portland Beer and Cheese Fest, which is sold out.

“Think beer at 360 degrees,” says Ezra Johnson-Greenough — co-founder of Portland Beer Week with Kerry Finsand and the man behind The New School, Portland’s leading voice for anything beer-related. “Alongside fun events open to the public, we have partnered with Oregon State University to offer industry folks a series of seminars, from beer-branding and marketing, to barrel-aging and sour and wild ale. We aim at providing a platform to unleash new ideas and learn from each other.”

Returning this year are classics such as the Portland Fruit Beer Festival, Rye Beer Fest and Sour and Barrel-Aged Beer Seminars. Some of the new events worth looking forward to are the Snackdown! 10 brewers and 10 chefs pairing event and the Fort George 3-Way IPA release party.

Official Beer of Portland Beer Week

Introducing the 2016 Portland Beer Week beer “Subcontinental IPA” — a Pacific Northwest IPA (7% ABV) collaboration between Portland Brewing and Double Mountain Brewery. Portland Brewing head brewer Ryan Pappe and Double Mountain brewmaster Matt Swihart incorporated their love for traditional Indian Garam Masala spiced food and beer. They added pepper, cardamom clove, cumin and saffron to help draw out the tropical notes from the El Dorado, Calypso, Centennial and Challenger hops. Portland-based comic book artist Michael Avon Oeming added PDX Man superhero to the label. Drink the Subcontinental IPA at the official bottle release from 4-6 p.m. June 10 at Whole Foods Market in the Pearl District, the Portland Brewing/Double Mountain Tap Takeover 3-5 p.m. June 11 at Belmont Station and other events.

Portland Beer Week Ice Cream

Salt & Straw ice cream will once again create a brand new Beer Ice Cream flavor — this year made with the official Portland Beer Week beer Subcontinental IPA. It will be available at special Portland Beer Week parties and the Wiz Bang Bar in Pine Street Market.
