SATURDAY PREFUNK: Craft beer and cider before Arsenio Hall, Red & Ruby and The Night of the Hunter

Share

SATURDAY, OCT. 1 2016: South Sound events + craft beer & cider …

Broadway Center + Silver City Brewery = silky smooth

Donnalson’s + The Copper Door = the finer things in life

Olympia Film Society + Vashon Ciderfest = How do you like them apples?

ARSENIO HALL

Arsenio Hall likely has some interesting insights on mogultician Donald Trump, as he was the ultimate winner of 2012’s Celebrity Apprentice. While his triumph reflected an ambition that The Donald could admire, his sense of humor and laidback talent for connecting with people gave his late ’80s to mid-’90s talk show a party vibe that other late night hosts couldn’t conjure. As a consummate entertainer from stage and screen to hitting the music charts as his alter ego Chunky A, Hall is the friendly face ready to make sure that audiences have a good time. Hall performs at the Pantages Theater at 7:30 p.m.

PREFUNK: Like an advanced placement teen dropped into remedial math, American wheat beer’s potential has been squandered. It has held its German forebears jockstrap. It warms the bench as IPAs enjoy the spotlight. Silver City Brewery says it’s high time to unlock it’s hazy powers and experience the full flavor of one of American craft brewing’s finer liquids. Kick that Blue Moon and its silly slice of orange to the curb and nestle up the Bremerton brewery’s taps beginning at noon for the return of its Ta-Ta Wheat Ale — a silky smooth American-style wheat beer packed with juicy, tropical flavor by Wai-Iti hops specially imported from New Zealand. A portion of the proceeds from this beer and related apparel will be donated to the American Cancer Society.

RED & RUBY

Some people can sing, but can’t entertain. Some people can entertain, but can’t sing. It is always a pleasure to find an artist who can do both equally as well — Lavon Hardison. The Olympia-based vocalist possesses a rich voice, which lends itself splendidly to every genre she attempts. Hardison is just as comfortable singing swing jazz as country and everything in between, as the classically trained vocalist takes her audiences on a musical journey every time she performs. When she’s paired with master guitarist Vince Brown, well you have Red & Ruby at 8 p.m. in G. Donnalson’s.

PREFUNK: Today, The Copper Door will be The Mahogany Door. We wouldn’t be surprised if they worked all through the night hammering up dark wood-paneled walls, adding tufted vintage couches, library lounge complete with burnt sienna-toned wainscoting and deep turquoise-colored walls, antique portraits, a fireplace and a stuffed-ram diorama displayed high on the wall converting their Stadium District bottle shop and taproom into a 1940s hunting lodge. The setting is ideal for barleywine. Right? When you hear the word “barleywine,” the image that comes to mind is probably a bit musty. Old men in smoking jackets, perhaps, or snifters atop stacks of decaying leather-bound books. While IPAs and sours have become darlings of the American craft-beer world, that bottle of barleywine often remains at the back of the cabinet. From 11 a.m. to close, thanks to The Copper Door, barleywine will receive some serious love. Expect to drink eight-plus of the West Coast’s finest lively and fruity, sometimes sweet, sometimes bittersweet, but always alcoholic barleywine.

THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER

A horror movie with qualities of a Grimm fairy tale, The Night of the Hunter stars a sublimely sinister Robert Mitchum as a traveling preacher named Harry Powell (he of the tattooed knuckles), whose nefarious motives for marrying a fragile widow, played by Shelley Winters, are uncovered by her terrified young children. Graced by images of eerie beauty and a sneaky sense of humor, this ethereal, expressionistic American classic — also featuring the contributions of actress Lillian Gish and writer James Agee — is cinema’s most eccentric rendering of the battle between good and evil. Catch it at 6:30 p.m. in the Capitol Theater.

PREFUNK: When Dave White says a cider event is cool, we listen. In 2007, the co-owner of Whitewood Cider in Olympia launched one of the first cider blogs in the nation, Old Time Cider, which led to invitations to judge cider competitions around the country and a founding member of the Northwest Cider Association. He’s been attending Vashon’s Ciderfest since 2008. He says it’s cool. He’ll be the first to set up his booth at today’s Vashon Ciderfest, surrounded by Vashon’s own Nashi Orchards and Dragon’s Head Cider, plus Alpenfire Cider, Vashon Winery and Seattle Distilling Company. The tasting will be held at The Lodges on Vashon Pavilion from 3-6 p.m., but there are a barrel full of cider events on the island beginning at 10 a.m. Check out the schedule at http://www.vashonchamber.com/pages/VashonCiderFest.
