BLUES VESPERS

Reverend Dave Brown loves the blues. He hosts monthly Blues Vespers in his Immanuel Presbyterian Church nestled in Tacoma’s North Slope Historic District. Honored by the Washington Blues Society in 2004 with the “Keeping the Blues Alive” award, Rev. Brown’s secular concerts of professional blues music rival the best blues shows in the state. At 5 p.m., the “MLK Blues Vespers” welcomes the Kim Archer Band with guest Jay Mabin on harmonica. “Our performance will be more blues than usual,” says Archer. “I’m very excited to perform in front of a spiritual audience in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.”

PREFUNK: Do you like your cider more fruity and sweet? Portland Cider Company’s Sangria (5.5%) blends seven different fruits, including the juices of orange, strawberry, pear, passion fruit, elderberry and lime, with its award-winning Sorta Sweet cider made from 100 percent Northwest apples. Pouring from Peaks and Pints’ Western red cedar tap log, Sangria cider is fruit-forward, coming across almost like a fruit punch. Which makes it perfect for both die-hard cider fans, and those new to cider who are looking for a familiar choice.

A 1960s LOVE STORY

As you watch Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner at 3 p.m. in the Broadway Center’s Theatre on the Square, you’ll no doubt wonder what the controversy was all about. Many parents would be supportive of their daughter’s involvement with a super doctor who has done medical research in Africa and is on his way to work with the World Health Organization, and who also happens to be incredibly handsome and charming. But the 1960s were a different time.

PREFUNK: Barleywine is a sit-up-and-take-notice style ideal for winter, with bold flavor and strength. They showcase complex blends of malts and hops, with wine-like strength. The higher alcohol level provides warmth that will take the chill away on the coldest January night in the South Sound. 7 Seas Brewing Co. has a version aged 12 months in bourbon barrels then blended with matured strong ale. The second of 7 Seas’ Vintage Ale Collection, its bottled Bourbon Barrel-aged Barleywine (11.2%) hits its Gig Harbor and Tacoma taprooms at 11 a.m. today.
