TACOMA PREFUNK FRIDAY, JUNE 23 2017: Iron Horse Hopping Hand IPA before Squeak and Squawk

PREFUNK: Independent craft breweries in the United States often contribute to military causes. Some of the breweries have taken their support one step further with beneficial campaigns, such as Iron Horse Brewery in Ellensburg, Washington. Iron Horse Brewery launched the Hopping Hands Project in May; a four-month, single hop IPA release with proceeds benefitting the Veterans Conservation Corps, a department of the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs. The VCC provides opportunities for veterans to connect with nature in their own way while restoring Washington’s natural resources. Bravo hops are the one-star general for Iron Horse in June. Peaks and Pints has the Bravo version of the Hopping Hands Project IPA pouring from our Western red cedar tap log. Expect a floral orange zest on the nose, smooth mouthfeel, piney resinous on the tongue and Iron Horse to give proceeds from the Hopping Hands Project keg directly to the VCC. Peaks and Pints, Tacoma

7:30 P.M. KAREEM KANDI BAND: Saxophonist Kareem Kandi’s sound derives from the classic, free, often enthusiastic tradition of Joshua Redman as filtered through Dexter Gordon and Sonny Stitt, all of whose shadows can be traced — Redman in Kandi’s funky organicism, Gordon in his dynamic harmonics, Stitt in the intensity that coats his every note with a Gritty City finish. Tonight, guitarist Owen Boxwell and bassist Ben Feldman’ll join him. G. Donnalson’s, Tacoma

9 P.M. SQUEAK AND SQUAWK: Squeaking. Squawking. Rocking. And rolling. Throw in some indie posturing, a dollop of cello playing, a healthy dose of experimenting and a heaping helping of tight pants and ironic haircuts and you have the Tacoma Squeak and Squawk Indie Music Festival, running through June 26. Tonight, Girl Trouble, Zell, Electric NoNo and Bes squeak and squawk at The Valley. Those interested in an all-ages show, the Fabulous Downey Brothers, Coma Figura and Smile for the Sky perform a 7 p.m. show at 2nd Cycle. The Valley, Tacoma
