TACOMA PREFUNK MONDAY, JULY 24 2017: Lorin Walker Madsen and The Big Sick

PREFUNK: Lorin Walker Madsen, a trailer park troubadour from Salt Lake City, knocks out grimy country-punk drinking ditties like some orphaned child of Hank III and the Devil Makes Three. Blending a road-tough attitude into his own brand of high desert honky punk — gritty vocals and honest lyrics laid over his take on traditional and red dirt country music — Madsen and his kick drum and guitar will perform during for a Peaks and Pints SudsPop session at 8 p.m. Expect good ol’ music to stomp your feet and raise a craft beer to. Peaks and Pints, Tacoma

9 P.M. THE BIG SICK: Kumail Nanjiani and his wife, Emily V. Gordon, relied on their own relationship history in crafting this romcom about a Pakistani Muslim who locks horns with his in-laws when his spouse is put into a coma. But Gordon is not a performer herself, so playing her character in the film is Zoe Kazan – whose 2012 film Ruby Sparks was a vehicle for herself and her own partner, Paul Dano. Geez, it’s like some kind of indie key party. The Big Sick demonstrates life is a glorious mess, in which people bungle stuff more often than not. Or, as Emily’s dad so inelegantly opines: “Love isn’t easy. That’s why they call it love.” The film also screens at 1, 3:40 and 6:20 p.m. The Grand Cinema, Tacoma
