THURSDAY PREFUNK: Craft beer before the Beatles

THURSDAY, MARCH 9 2017: Beatles film + craft beer …

THE FAB FOUR ON FILM

In 1967, Richard Goldstein of the New York Times called the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band “an album of special effects, dazzling but ultimately fraudulent.” He liked only the last song, “A Day in the Life,” but called it “a coda to an otherwise undistinguished collection of work.” Musicologist Scott Freiman lectures on this, “fake band, where the Beatles can pretend to be someone else … and try lots of different things” in the documentary Deconstructing Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band at 6:45 p.m. in The Grand Cinema. Freiman looks at Sgt. Pepper from multiple angles, exploring the history behind the music.

PREFUNK: Mendicino-based Anderson Valley Brewing brings their newest release to the Peaks and Pints Lodge Meeting at 6 p.m. G&T Gose (4.2%) is a “beer cocktail” with only beer — plus saltwater, malted wheat, lemon peel, lemon grass, juniper, cinchona bark, grains of paradise, cucumber and a touch of lactobacillus. Anderson Valley will also pour its latest IPA, Eetah (7.5%), hopped with a blend of Chinook, Citra and Amarillo, as well as the freakin’ delicious Boont Amber Ale and the massive Huge Arker, a Russian Imperial Stout aged in Wild Turkey Bourbon barrels for a rich, dark chocolate flavor, ardent warmth of alcohol and hints of coffee, vanilla and dark fruits. Expect door prizes.
