WIZARD OF OZ

“Hark! We, the people of the Land of Oz do hereby generally proclaim, with all due solemnity and pseudo-legally binding authority, that YOU shall, now and until such time as we appoint a successor, hold the distinguished and lauded rank of Wizard of Oz and shall enjoy all the rank, privilege and powers warranted by said appointment.” Lakewood Playhouse stages the Wizard of Oz at 7 p.m.

PREFUNK: International Stout Day takes place today when beer lovers around the world will partake in the beer style best known for its English and Irish roots. Want to enjoy it in good company? Head over to Peaks and Pints at Basecamp Proctor as Fort George Brewery will be pouring its Cavatica Stout over ice cream. The Latin root of Cavatica is cave, crevice, abyss or a dark place. Just like a stout should be. We don’t know what the Latin root of ice cream is, but the two together makes for a damn tasty treat. The 9-year-old brewery at the mouth of the Columbia River in Astoria, Oregon, will be in our lodge tonight with not only Cavatica Stout but also the newly released seasonal Java the Hop — a small batch, draft-only release that combines a single Mosaic hop and single Portland Coava Coffee Roasters bean for an IPA with huge coffee aromatics, a hint of chocolate roast and a tropical hop finish. Drop by from 6-9 p.m. and celebrate International Stout Day with Fort George.

TREVALYAN TRIANGLE

After many years with the incomparable Billy Stoops, Leanne Trevalyan and Junkyard Jane remains one of the most original bands in the Northwest and beyond. Trevalyan’s washboard playing adds an aura of the band’s unique style of swampabilly blues. Over the years, Stoops and Trevalyan have each started various side projects to, in her words “keep them from driving each other nuts.” Trevalyan leans toward the acoustic singer/songwriter genre by way of her project Trevalyan Triangle. For this venture, she swaps in her washboard for an acoustic guitar. With Barbra Blue on bass, the duo experiments with a sound that mixes pop, folk, rock and just a hint of Americana. Once in a while they welcome a third member by way of drummer Chris Leighton or guitar virtuoso Mark Riley. Catch the band with The Hillbaileys at 8 p.m. in The Valley.

PREFUNK: Downtown: On the Go, the transportation advocate for downtown Tacoma, in association with Tacoma Green Drinks, will be highlighting the accessibility of Tacoma breweries using the Sound Transit Tacoma Link with their annual Link and Drink. Leave your car at home and use the safe, free and fun transportation downtown to explore what Tacoma does best: craft beer. Go to Odd Otter Brewing Co. at 5:30 p.m. and drink. Then join 40 fellow drinkers as they hop on the Tacoma Light Rail to drink at three other downtown Tacoma craft breweries: Dunagan Brewing Co., The Harmon and Wingman Brewers — all part of the South Sound Craft Crawl. Link and drink.  Drink and Link.  Attendees will be greeted by DOTG staff on the Link and have the opportunity to win prizes along the way.

BOOK PARTY

King’s Books is throwing a book party. Join author Josh Kilen in a celebration of all things Puget Sound. There will be readings from his book, Around the Sound: Amusing Thoughts and Tales from Washington’s Puget Sound, plus fun games, cookies shaped like Washington state, crackers, cheese, and local wines and beers. The pages turn at 7 p.m.

PREFUNK: Backwoods Brewing Co. sits in the heart of the Columbia Gorge, in the small town of Carson, Washington. It was founded by the Waters family in 2012, as a single-barrel brewpub with local producers sourcing their hops, grain and yeast. They now operate on a 20-barrel system in their new Stevenson facility, making beer for both draft and package. Their focus is on balanced beers, such as the hop-forward Logyard IPA, that isn’t overly bitter on the finish. Sip Backwoods delights from 4-8 p.m. at Engine House No. 9.

TWELFTH NIGHT

University of Puget Sound Professor of Theatre Arts Geoff Proehl directs his students in the enduring Shakespeare comedy Twelfth Night, set in the Romantic era of the 1820s. Some directors treat Twelfth Night —which famously begins with the separation of two twins in a shipwreck — as a light-hearted farce, by others as a love story with a melancholy edge. Proehl is asking his student actors to discover as much as they can of both these interpretations of the play. Catch the play at 7:30 p.m. in the Norton Clapp Theatre in Jones Hall on the UPS campus.

PREFUNK: You’ve had the mustache for a year now, and have been contemplating jumping from amateur to pro. Grab some friends, bearded or not, and head to Wet Coast Brewing Co. in Gig Harbor from 3-9 p.m. for a ‘stache-ogling Movember Party in honor of whiskers. Bring your stache and partake in the shenanigans for a good cause. For every drink purchased $1 will be donated to Movember Foundation’s prostate cancer research. The Movember Foundation, which refers to participating dudes as “Mo Bros,” says the purpose of those autumn mustaches is to “change the face of men’s health.”
