TUESDAY PREFUNK: 1984 and craft beer

Share

TUESDAY, APRIL 4 2017: South Sound events + craft beer …

The Grand Cinema + Olympia Film Society + Peaks and Pints = Gray 56 degree day in April

Brewers Row + The Copper Door = Craft beer

NO SUCH THING AS ALTERNATIVE FACTS

Today, more than 180 art house movie theaters, including The Grand Cinema in Tacoma (1:30, 6:45 and 9:15 p.m.) and the Capitol Theater in Olympia (4, 6:30 and 9 p.m.) will screen Michael Radford’s 1984 film adaption of 1984. The date was chosen to match the “bright cold day in April” at the beginning of the book when protagonist Winston Smith breaks the rules by writing in a diary. The movie stars John Hurt, who died in January, as Smith, man who rebels against Big Brother. According to pre-screening hype, “Orwell’s portrait of a government that manufactures their own facts, demands total obedience, and demonizes foreign enemies, has never been timelier. The endeavor encourages theaters to take a stand for our most basic values: freedom of speech, respect for our fellow human beings, and the simple truth that there are no such things as ‘alternative facts.’” By the way, attorney/guitarist Wade Neal will lead a post-film discussion following the 6:45 p.m. screening at The Grand.

PREFUNK: Founders Brewing Co. of Grand Rapids, Michigan, is celebrating its 20th anniversary year throughout 2017, and they intend to do so in style, with a series of new barrel-aged beers including Frootwood, which is on tap at Peaks and Pints in Tacoma’s proctor neighborhood. The cherry ale aged in oak barrels hits the tongue with a Battle Royale of flavors: bourbon, cherries and maple syrup. The wood proves itself the star of this beer, adding depth and taming the tart cherry while the maple imposes a velvety texture that lingers for not a moment too long. When you hear someone say a beer is “all over the place,” think Frootwood. Sip this one while pondering the meaning of life.

TASTING TUESDAY

The Copper Door bottle shop and taproom in Tacoma’s Stadium District is busy preparing for its three-day, third anniversary party this weekend, but not busy enough to skip their weekly Tasting Tuesday beer flight. At 6 p.m. expect 7 Seas Brewing’s Life jacket Session IPA, Reuben’s Daily Pale, Ghostfish Vanishing Point Pale Ale and Postdoc Prereq Pale Ale lined up on the bar top.

PREFUNK: A craft beer prefunk before a craft beer flight? Oh hell yes! E9 Brewery will pour its craft beers at Brewers Row beginning at 5 p.m. The North End Tacoma Mexican restaurant will also offer a food pairing with the Tacoma brewery’s beers, including ceviche jicama tacos paired with E9 Mosaic IPA.
