6-Pack of Things To Do: Jan. 17-18 2022
We are all unique individuals and together, we comprise a community. Our willingness to shine our brightest contributes to the world. When we are fulfilling our destinies, working toward our own greatest good, it lifts the vibration globally. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “Dream” will be a focus today and tomorrow in Tacoma. Not all of us are crusaders like Dr. King, but we all have dreams. What’s yours?
DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY: Celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with the Washington State History Museum with an all-day virtual program. Watch Living Voices perform “The Right To Dream” in an online video. Explore a digital experience detailing Dr. King’s visit to Washington 60 years ago (in 1961). Watch and participate in a pre-recorded art-making activity inspired by Dr. King’s visit with artist Valencia Carroll. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., 1911 Pacific Ave., Tacoma
CIDER FLIGHT: Named for a sharp hook in the Deschutes River in Central Oregon’s high desert, Bend wasn’t on everyone’s radar; decades ago, it was a bump on the state highway between golf resorts Black Butte Ranch and Sunriver. Lumber ruled the roost until the two large timber mills closed in 1994. Now what? Boom! Bend underwent a housing boom — and an image boom — in the mid ’90s. Suddenly mountain biking wasn’t just for teenage boys, kayaks outnumbered suits and ties, and microbrews poured in Mount Bachelor’s ski lodges; Bend became a paradise for outdoor adventures and outdoor beer and cider gardens. Breweries, wineries and cideries began popping up and locals would rather discuss hops and apples than the predictably sunny weather. Today, Peaks & Pints presents a to-go flight of cider made in Bend. 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Peaks & Pints, 3816 N. 26th St., Basecamp Proctor, Tacoma
TACOMA LIGHT TRAIL: The Tacoma Light Trail is exactly that: a walking or driving trail around Tacoma’s downtown to see light art. The art – which ranges from projection mapping to video, illuminated sculpture and sheer blasts of light – is visible from the street in more than 40 locations through an extended Jan. 30. Peaks & Pints suggests you check out our interactive online map, pick an area to explore on foot, and look for the QR poster at each spot for artist information and to play the accompanying music/poetry. Tonight, Jan. 17, is your last chance to catch Steve LaBerge’s otherworldly “Touching Down in Tacoma” inside the Pantages Theater and write a story about it for Creative Colloquy. 5-9 p.m., Monday, Jan. 17, 901 Broadway, Tacoma, photo courtesy of Silong Chhun
DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY: The City of Tacoma presents Hope & Healing, a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration tonight. The program will highlight the present and the future of Dr. King’s impacts on our community and will feature local performers and speakers who work and volunteer to ensure our community represents equity, hope, and healing. 8 p.m., Monday, Jan. 17, TV Tacoma and Tacoma Events & Venues Facebook through January
FILM: Over the past decade, Mamoru Hosoda has built a reputation as one of Japan’s most celebrated and recognizable anime movie writers and directors. Belle, the latest movie from Hosoda’s Studio Chizu, is a futuristic riff on the classic Beauty and the Beast where seemingly everyone on Earth has the option to plug into a virtual reality called U, which automatically generates an avatar for them based on their biometric information. The Grand Cinema offers the subtitled and English-dubbed version today and tomorrow. 11:30 a.m., 2:15, 5, and 7:45 p.m., Jan. 17-18, 606 S. Fawcett, Tacoma
DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING NEXT DAY: The 36th Annual University of Puget Sound Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration will be held online Tuesday night. Their program will honor and highlight the life and work of local legend Nettie J. Asberry and her fight for civil rights in Tacoma and beyond. The North Tacoma university will be hosting speakers from the Washington State Historical Society, The Nettie J. Homesite Project, and the Tacoma City Association of Colored Women’s Clubs. 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 18, UPS Zoom Room, register here
