6-Pack of Things To Do: Jan. 31-Feb. 1 2022
According to weather reports February will enter like a snow leopard and leave like a Bono, so we have that going for us. It’s Black History Month, which the Tacoma Public Library has a bunch of BHM events scheduled. Enjoy Stout Month at Peaks & Pints, check out Afghanistan animation, drink cherry cider, become a Tapmaster, and get your shaman on. Just keep an eye on the weather before you leave the house — apparently February can be wild as wild as snow leopards and Bono.
FEBRUARY STOUT MONTH: Now in its sixth year, this year’s Peaks & Pints February Stout Month celebration — this year titled “Peaks and Pints Escape To Stout Mountain” — has all the things you’d expect: powerlifters with snarky comments, scads of barrel aged stouts; banished porters trying to sneak on draft; Fremont Brewing grabbing headliner status; in-jokes for those who have actually climbed Stout Mountain near Salem; and lots of frenetic action in lieu of supply chain co-operation. In other words: A kick ass time! The Tacoma Proctor District craft beer lodge, bottle shop and restaurant will tap five stouts on our Western cedar tap log through February for in-house enjoyment and Campfire Crowler carry outs. 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, Feb. 1-28, Peaks and Pints, 3816 N. 26th St., Basecamp Proctor, Tacoma, no cover
CIDER FLIGHT: Since the Seahawks weren’t in yesterday’s NFL Championship Games, did you hike, ski or snowboard instead? Cherries significantly improved recovery time after workouts. Researchers suggest that the powerful antioxidant compounds in cherry juice likely decreased oxidative damage to the athletes’ muscles — the damage that normally occurs when muscles are worked to their max — allowing the muscles to recover more quickly. Great. Sounds delish. Well, apparently cherry juice is great for slackers too, having shown benefits for those of us with diets lacking in fruit and vegetables (which is, let’s face it, is most of us). A single glass of cherry juice contained the nutrient equivalent of 23 servings of fruit and vegetables. Still with us? Let’s drink cherry-flavored ciders to make us believe our muscles will heal and our hangovers will disappear. Hobble over to our Proctor District lodge for Peaks and Pints Monday Cider Flight: Cherry. 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday, Jan. 31, 3816 N. 26th St., Basecamp Proctor, Tacoma
SHAMAN: Anthropologist and psychiatrist Dr. Roger Walsh from the University of California. Dr. Walsh defines shamanism as, “A family of traditions whose practitioners focus on voluntarily entering altered states of consciousness in which they experience themselves or their spirit(s) interacting with other entities, often by traveling to other realms, in order to serve their community.” Patrick has been a Shamanic Practitioner for more than 12 years, having studied with local and international teachers, including a two-year shamanic training with Sandra Ingerman. He’s offering 15-minute readings and healings at Crescent Moon Gifts. 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Monday, Jan. 31, 6901 Sixth Ave., Tacoma
FILM: FLEE tells the extraordinary true story of Amin Nawabi as he grapples with a painful secret he has kept hidden for 20 years, one that threatens to derail the life he has built for himself. Recounted mostly through animation to director Jonas Poher Rasmussen, he tells for the first time the story of his extraordinary journey as a child refugee from Afghanistan. 2:45, 5:30, and 7:35 p.m., Monday-Tuesday, Jan. 31-Feb. 1, The Grand Cinema, 606 S. Fawcett, Tacoma
BLACK HISTORY MONTH: Visit Moore Library Branch each week in February to learn about Black artists who shaped the world. Each week the South Tacoma library will feature a different artist’s story and work, as well as provide materials for patrons to create their own masterpieces. No registration necessary. Noon to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Feb.1, Moore Library, 215 S. 56th St., Tacoma
TAPMASTER: Do you have what it takes to be Tapmaster of 2022? Tides Tavern will test your tap tuition by tapping 12 draft beers throughout February with punch cards to keep track of your progress. There is a limit of three beers consumed in house per day. Those who complete their card will get a limited-edition T-shirt that can only be obtained by completing Tapmaster within the month. 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday-Thursday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 2925 Harborview Dr., Gig Harbor
