MORNING FOAM FOR WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 20 2017: A seven-taster flight of craft beer news, from the fluffy head all the way to the soccer playing dog.
In 2010, Tacoma artist Aaron Trotter-Voronoff — a “21st century stylistic schizophrenic kind of guy” as he liked to call himself — created a blog to “stir things up” in Tacoma. Trotter-Voronoff — or Voronoff the Ghost Critic as he also calls himself — critiqued art on his blog, “Tacoma Needs More Art.” Shortly after, he moved to Portland, Oregon, to stir things up too. He has since dropped the Voronoff from his name, but his artistic talent remains the same. Aaron Trotter has released a new deck of illustrated playing cards featuring Oregon breweries from Central Oregon, the Columbia River Gorge, the Oregon Coast, and the Willamette Valley. The first printing of 100 decks will debut at the Portland Fresh Hops Fest at Oaks Amusement Park 5-9 p.m. Sept. 29 and noon to 8 p.m. Sept. 30.
South Puget Sound Community College will partner with Craft District, LLC, to lease space in a facility near the former Olympia Brewery in Tumwater. The space will serve as the long-term home of the school’s new Craft Brewing and Distilling degree program. SPSCC expects to be in the new facility by 2018’s fall quarter. In the meantime, the program’s inaugural year will be held at the school’s Olympia campus. The Washington beer Blog has more details here.
Populuxe Brewing will open the doors to their new location in the Seattle neighborhood of Ballard Saturday, Sept. 23. The new brewery has an expanded tasting room, an arcade with games from the Seattle Pinball Museum and Ballard’s biggest beer garden.
Oskar Blues Brewery in Lyons, Colorado (not France) has released the first canned mixed drink in its new line of canned drinks called Spirits by Oskar Blues, or S.O.B. This first highball is a take on the Moscow Mule, appropriately titled mOSKow Mule, and is made with the brewery’s own ginger beer, as well as a “handmade vodka.”
PorchDrinking.com talks Breakfast Stout with Founders Brewing Company co-founder Dave Engbers. “Breakfast Stout is the same recipe every year. We’ve modified the coffees that we use in it a while back but overall that recipe is consistent.”
Sour beer is the hottest cold drink of 2017. The funky brew is the latest niche offering to take off in a market obsessed with finding ever more obscure and complex beers.
