TACOMA PREFUNK WEDNESDAY, OCT. 25 2017: Deschutes Black Butte Porter Nitro and East Bay punk flick
PREFUNK: Deschutes Brewery named its first beer and flagship brand porter after a stratovolcano in the Deschutes National Forest near its brewery in Bend, Oregon. On the nose Black Butte Porter bears a hint of nuttiness, followed by the unmistakable smells of rich yet soft milk chocolate. Black Butte is slightly bitter in the first sip, but mellows out with a chocolate and roasted finish. As creamy and chocolaty as it is it’s even more creamy on nitro, which it is today at Peaks and Pints bottle shop, taproom and restaurant in Tacoma’s Proctor District.
11 A.M. HURRICANE MARIA RELIEF: The Red Hot is tapping a keg of Airways Jumbo Juice. For $8, you’ll receive a beer to enjoy, and your entire $8 will be donated to The Puerto Rico Hurricane Maria Community Relief & Recovery Fund, to aid those needing assistance from the storm devastation in Puerto Rico. Additional monetary donations will be accepted.

7 P.M. TURN IT AROUND: THE STORY OF EAST BAY PUNK: In 1985, a young Tim Armstrong left the Oakland area for New York in search of a better punk scene. Later that same year, the future Operation Ivy and Rancid guitarist was shocked to read about a new club being built at 924 Gilman Street in Berkeley in an issue of Maximum Rocknroll. This story is one of many from Turn It Around: The Story of East Bay Punk, a sprawling, nearly three-hour film that chronicles the evolution of punk in the Bay Area. Burst through The Grand Cinema doors and catch the film that centers the East Bay’s vibrant DIY punk scene — a scene that ultimately led to the global rise of mainstream punk in the mid-Nineties.
