TACOMA PREFUNK SUNDAY, NOV. 5 2017: Three Magnets Deuce Juice and Dia de los Muertos

PREFUNK: Clint Dempsey isn’t your typical soccer player who hits the tanning salon in between games. Once he’s off the pitch Dempsey transforms into rapper “Deuce” and goes back to the hood and spits fire flame bars in the streets, yo. Three Magnets Brewing Co. isn’t your typical brewery. The award-winning Olympia brewery drops everything when a soccer game hits its big screen. It makes complete sense Three Mags brewed a beer to honor the reigning superstar of soccer, Deuce. Three Magnets recently brewed Deuce Juice 2 in an all-out attempt to get Dempsey’s attention. Its fruity-and-piney hop profile pays tribute to the places Dempsey has played (Seattle, Texas, UK), and an 8 percent ABV for his international jersey number. It’s a five-hop blend winner that captures an endless amount of tropical fruit and pine wrapped up in silky-smooth haze. Drop by Peaks and Pints and pop open a can of Deuce Juice 2.

10 A.M. TO 4 P.M. 13TH ANNUAL DIA DE LOS MURTOS: That’s right. For the 13th year, Tacoma Art Museum hosts a Dia de los Muertos Free Community Celebration. Day of the Dead, ya’ll! This may or may not surprise you, but the Day of the Dead Festival at TAM brings in the largest crowd of the year. Despite the name of the holiday, it and this festival are all about honoring life — attendees will be greeted by much color, chances to make their own arts and crafts, life-affirming mariachi music and installations.

9 P.M. SIP & SPIN: There is something spiritually satisfying about vinyl. It’s a subtle way of saying you care. As the buyer, you pledge your allegiance to the album by accepting its inconvenience. It takes up space. It is difficult to actually listen to. It requires specific storage conditions. Deep inside, you don’t want music to be convenient. You want to submit yourself to the artform. Vinyl gives you that opportunity in some small way. Like a golden cross necklace or miniature Buddha shrine, it is not the physical specimen of the vinyl record that enriches you but the intangible ideas it represents: permanence, devotion. Those bulky, archaic discs lining your shelves can be an inspiration to live your life as if it will one day be pressed to vinyl. Walk into the Zodiac Supper Club with your head high and your vinyl underneath your arm. DJ Dollface spins your vinyl while you kick back, sip cocktails and enjoy.
