Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Giving Tuesday On the Fly

Share

Giving Tuesday, or #GivingTuesday, was created in 2012 with a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good.  It always takes place the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, which is today. It is a global day of charitable giving unleashing the power of people, organizations, and craft breweries to transform their communities and the world. Peaks & Pints likes to think of some craft breweries as liquid philanthropists as they donate a piece of their pie to charity. They believe true fulfillment never comes from financial or material success. Happiness and deep sense of connection is their goal. The five craft breweries we highlight in our to-go beer sample flight today sit on the same mountaintop. Money comprises the base, but idealism, balance, and good vibes more than tops the peak. This is not a compendium of the only or even the most generous breweries, just a handful that not only serve their community by proffering fresh beer, but by pouring out their souls as well, through generous donations and volunteerism. Stop by Peaks & Pints today grab the beer below brewed by breweries that have their hearts, check books, and mash tuns in the right places. Cheers to Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Giving Tuesday On the Fly.

Aslan Guiding Star

5% ABV

Aslan Brewing’s Guiding Star is a Belgian-style dark lager with flavors of baking spices, cake breads and an herbal, spiced hop character brewed with the intention of bringing awareness to a conversation about mental health and the prevention of suicide. A portion of profits from Guiding Star will benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. By creating a culture that’s smart about mental health, advocating for legislative policies that make suicide prevention a priority, and funding innovative research, we can save lives,” states Aslan Brewing.

Georgetown Bob’s Brown Ale

6.2% ABV

Manny Chao, co-founder of Georgetown Brewing and namesake of their flagship beer, Manny’s Pale Ale, began brewing Bob’s Brown Ale in honor of his friend, Bob Hirsch. Hirsch died of cancer just after celebrating his 21st birthday; May 14 was his birthday. One hundred percent of the proceeds from this big, chocolaty, hoppy brown ale are donated in honor of Hirsch to the Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Sierra Nevada Dankful

7.4% ABV, 55 IBU

Sierra Nevada Brewing’s Dankful IPA is a generously hoppy beer that will help the brewery raise funds for a variety of charitable works. The brewery has committed to at least $1 million in donations through the program over this year. Brewed with Ekuanot, Mosaic, Idaho 7, Columbus, Nelson Sauvin, and Neo-Mexicanus hops, Dankful hits the nose with catty, resinous weed, and some lemon zest. The initial flavors are resin and edible flowers followed by a grapefruit pith bitterness to finish.

Urban Family Object They Carried

7% ABV

Brewed in honor of Sgt. William C. Stacey, benefiting American Legion Post 206, Urban Family Brewing’s Object They Carried IPA is brewed with Citra, Amarillo, and Ekuanot for a sweet, tropical, citrusy nose followed by grapefruit, hops, and a bittered balanced finish.

Ex Novo City of Books

6.2% ABV

Since opening in 2014, Ex Novo Brewing’s mission was to contribute all — yes, all — of its profits (that don’t get redirected to infrastructure improvements, which is not code for lining any pockets) to its four primary nonprofit partners: Friends of the Children, IJM, Impact NW and MercyCorps. Three years later, the Oregon Department of Justice advised the company through a review of its entity structure and business model that it would be more appropriate for Ex Novo to operate as a for-profit entity. Ex Novo now gives most of their net profits to their nonprofit organization partners allowing for some flexibility for benevolence to employees and communities who may also have a need, such as independent bookstores. Ex Novo’s City of Books West Coast IPA is brewed with Portland’s infamous Powells Books to benefit independent bookstores nationally. It’s brewed with Citra and experimental hop HBC 586 for notes of tangerine, pineapple, and lychee with a clean and bitter finish.
