Peaks and Pints Pilot Project: Old Schoolhouse Brewery On The Fly

Share

Casey and Laura Ruud purchased the floundering Winthrop brewery in 2008, changed the name to Old Schoolhouse Brewery, cleaned it up, and quickly turned it into an award-winning gem of a brewpub. Life happens, and the Ruud’s sold the brewery to three gentlemen who grew up in New Hampshire together, brothers Nathan and Jacob Young and Troy Anderson. Jacob and Nathan knew restaurants and bars inside and out. Troy coached high school track with Jacob and worked at Microsoft with Nathan. All three enjoy the outdoors, which is almost mandatory since the original riverfront brewery and gastropub is in Winthrop, which sits east of Mazama and north of Twisp in Okanogan County. Old Schoolhouse Brewmaster Kyle Koger, who worked his way up at the brewery, mostly brews in their larger production facility and taproom in Twisp. Koger is responsible for taking the brewery to the next level — integrating the art and science of brewing beers with the medals to prove it. Today, Peaks and Pints presents a to-go flight of Old Schoolhouse beer — a flight we call Peaks and Pints Pilot Project: Old Schoolhouse Brewery On The Fly.

Peaks and Pints Pilot Project: Old Schoolhouse Brewery On The Fly

Old Schoolhouse Easy Runaway

5.9% ABV

This award-winning Unfiltered West Coast IPA is brewed with 2-row, Pilsner malt, Spelt malt, rice hulls, C15, rolled oats, and flaked wheat then hopped with Mosiac, Simcoe, and Ekuanot for low grain and citrus hops on the nose. On the tongue, expect a smooth mouthfeel and flavors of pineapple and citrus with a semi-dry finish.

Old Schoolhouse Epiphany Pale

6% ABV

This medium-bodied pale is brewed with 2-row and English Crystal malts, plus Cascade and Amarillo hops for moderate bitterness, slight caramel malt flavor, and citrusy hop aroma. When you visit Old Schoolhouse in Winthrop check out the Epiphany Pale medals: Best of the Northwest/Pacific Region, US Beer Tasting Championships, 2015; Bronze Medal, Washington Beer Awards, 2015; Best of the Northwest, SIP Northwest Magazine, 2014; Best of the Northwest/Pacific Region, US Beer Tasting Championships, 2014.

Old Schoolhouse Betty Mopper

6.9% ABV, 35 IBU

This crisp and delicious IPA is the second in Old Schoolhouse’s series inspired by the classic Heady Topper, Alchemist’s OG of New England IPAs. Brewed with Mosaic, Azacca Cryo, Loral Cryo and Idaho 7 hops, Betty Mopper is a light bodied hazy IPA with notes of mango, orange, and other tropical fruit.

Old Schoolhouse Stowaway Pale

5.8% ABV, 47 IBU

This Northwest-style pale is light and crisp with a pleasant, citrus lemon hop character from Citra, Simcoe, and Mosaic. “Mom, if Amanda has a new box of dishwasher soap that holds 30 percent more than the old box. The new box holds 2 kg. How much dishwashing soap did the old box hold?” You tell your son to just look on the label and crack open a Stowaway and go away.

Old Schoolhouse Between Peaks IPA

7% ABV

Peaks & Pints answered the morning School bell, traveled past 101 mountain peaks, and brewed our new house beer, Between Peaks IPA, at Old Schoolhouse in Winthrop, Washington. As we approached the town of Winthrop, Pinyon Pines, Bristlecone Pine, and Ponderosa Pine trees were swaying in the wind between the peaks. Between Peaks West Coast-style, old school IPA is aggressively hopped with Simcoe, Simcoe Cryo, Chinook, Cascade Cryo, and HBC 638 hops and bursting with flavors of pine and subtle citrus, loaded with mounds of hops, and balanced with a blend of four different malts. Like those welcoming pine trees, each pint of Between Peaks is like a pine bough swaying across your face.

Old Schoolhouse Crystal Visions

7% ABV, 55 IBU

Old Schoolhouse Head Brewer Kyle Koger brewed this IPA in honor of his running the Crystal rapid on the Colorado River. This hazy IPA features Citra cryo, Loral cryo, HBC630, Mosaic cryo, and Simcoe hops for notes of pineapple, tangerine, and mango. Drink this IPA if you hear your child burping the alphabet on Zoom.

Old Schoolhouse Century Club

8.5% ABV

For their 100th batch, Old Schoolhouse brewed this hazy West Coast double IPA brewed with 2-row, Golden Promise, Pilsner, Wheat malt, Spelt malt, rolled oats, and wheat, plus Southern Cross, Idaho 7, Azacca Cryo, and Mosiac Cryo hops for bright tropical hop flavors followed by a balanced, refreshing bitterness.
