6-Pack of Things To Do Aug. 5-7 2022

The weekend is here again, and with that comes plenty of fun and drink events around Tacoma. Whether you want to stroll the Proctor Arts Fest or Porchfest with the family or enjoy adult afternoons with the launch of Tacoma Beer Week, this weekend has options for everyone.

PODCAST: It’s March 3, 2014. The inaugural Tacoma Beer Week comes in like a lamb. Tacoma Brewing is brewing in the former Amocat Café. 7 Seas is only in Gig Harbor. The Copper Door will open a month later. Pacific Brewing and Odd Otter won’t open until late fall. Wet Coast Brewing is just a dream. Sig, Black Fleet, Peaks & Pints, Edison City Alehouse, Brewers Row, and Beer Star aren’t a thing. This week on the Grit and Grain podcast, they sit down with Tacoma Beer Week organizers Gini Sommer and Kyleigh Palmer to discuss the history of Tacoma Beer Week, this year’s TBW events, and its paramount event, Brew Five Three: Beer & Music Festival. You can to the Grit and Grain Podcast on Channel 253, Apple Music, Spotify, Google Play, iHeartRadio, Stitcher, and gritandgrainpodcast.com.

TACOMA BEER WEEK: Tacoma Beer Week kicks off today with eight local beer bars tapping the “official” TBW beer, Grit and Glory Pale Ale brewed by Wet Coast Brewing and E9 Brewing. Starting at 5 p.m. head to Peaks & Pints, Beer Star, or The Red Hot on Tacoma’s North Side and Pint Defiance in the West End to be one of the first to taste it. In South Tacoma, The Opal Lounge and Edison City Alehouse will also tap a keg. Rainier Growlers will have it in Puyallup as will Zog’s on Fox Island. Other weekend TBW events include Brew Five Three: Beer & Music Festival on Saturday afternoon and Narrows Brewing’s Anniversary Party on Sunday afternoon. For the full list of TBW events, visit tacomabeerweek.com.

PROCTOR ARTS FEST: The streets of Tacoma’s Proctor District will be packed Saturday, Aug. 6., as the family-friendly, free admission Proctor Arts Fest is back! From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., North 26th and Proctor will host more than 105 artisans and craft vendors, three stages of live entertainment, kids’ area with family stage, the Proctor Farmers Market, book sale at Wheelock Library, special from Proctor District businesses, and much more.

BREW FIVE THREE: Saturday, Aug. 6, Tacoma Arts Live presents Brew Five Three: Beer & Music Festival at Ninth Street and Broadway Avenue in downtown Tacoma, with two sessions — 1-4 p.m. and 5-8 p.m. Participating breweries include local favorites such as 7 Seas, Black Fleet, E9, Sig, Narrows, Odd Otter, Wet Coast, plus regional players such as Spokane’s Lumberbeard, Vancouver’s Vice Beer, and Port Orchard’s Deep Draft and Portland’s Great Notion. Organized by Irina Rasputnis, Tanya Lubow, and Katy Peterson, Porchfest offers a medium for folks to meet and get to know their neighbors, all while walking around the neighborhood and enjoying fun music. Porchfest takes place between South Cedar Street and Sprague Avenue, and from Sixth Avenue to South 12th Street. There are 32 “host porches” and more than 50 bands. For more details, visit tacomaporchfest.org.

FILM: Intrepid scientists and lovers Katia and Maurice Krafft died in a volcanic explosion doing the very thing that brought them together: unraveling the mysteries of volcanoes by capturing the most explosive imagery ever recorded. For two decades, the daring French volcanologist couple roamed the planet, chasing eruptions and documenting their discoveries. Ultimately, they lost their lives in a 1991 volcanic explosion, leaving a legacy that forever enriched our knowledge of the natural world. Director Sara Dosa and the filmmaking team fashion a lyrical celebration of the intrepid scientists’ spirit of adventure, drawing from the Kraffts’ spectacular archive, opening today at The Grand Cinema. Fire of Love screens at 11:45 a.m., 2, 4:30 and 7 p.m., Friday, Aug. 5-Sunday, Aug. 7, 606 S. Fawcett, Tacoma
