There is something you should know about beer: There is a holiday for virtually everything about beer that is celebrated somewhere, somehow, including today’s IPA Day, which gives glory to hops, bittering units, and IPAs. Founded in 2011 on the first Thursday in August, IPA Day is a global celebration of craft beer. It is a universal movement that was created to unite the voices of craft beer enthusiasts, bloggers, and brewers worldwide. IPA Day was originally developed as a social media-based holiday, but has since expanded into a worldwide party, boasting hundreds of IPA-themed events, celebrations and Peaks and Pints in-house beer flight. Since Peaks & Pints hosts the release party for Escape From Indiana IPA, a collaboration with Double Mountain Brewery & Cidery and their Columbia Gorge buddies Everybody’s Brewing tonight, our IPA Day flight is focused on these two breweries. Everybody’s Early Riser Easy IPA
4.5% ABV, 22 IBU
Session beers are easy to repeat because of their lower alcohol content and general perception as being less filling. Whatever your “session” — an evening on the rooftop, gathered around a campfire, front row at the concert — you want a beer that keeps the good times going, not sends people packing. Everybody’s new session IPA, Early Riser Easy IPA, is a citrus-forward IPA without the high ABV, so you can knock a few back without skipping that morning mountain bike ride.
Double Mountain Go Ask Talus
6.2% ABV, 65 IBU
Talus, previously known as HBC 692, is a variety from the Hop Breeding Company, which is a joint venture between John I. Haas and Yakima Chief Ranches. It is the result of a hybrid pollination of the Sabro and open pollination. Double Mountain’s Go Ask Talus strikes a harmony between malt body, aroma, and bitterness. The IPA is brewed with only the Talus hop, both a regular version and the Cryo version. The result is a crisp, clean aroma of ripe grapefruit down the rabbit hole into a magical, dewy forest of pineapple and a chessboard of cascading mango and papaya.
Everybody’s Country Boy IPA
6.2% ABV, 69 IBU
Doug and Christine Ellenberger turn their pub in historic downtown White Salmon, Washington, into Everybody’s Brewing. Their love for each other, the great outdoors, and craft beer fueled a successful business and community hub. Their flagship beer, Country Boy IPA, is a classic-styled IPA, brewed with Columbus, Chinook, and Cascade hops. The body is fairly dry, with just enough sweetness to make it very drinkable. The hops give a nice bitter flavor, and clean citrus character — more on the lemongrass and yellow grapefruit side.
Double Mountain Iowa Bar Flight
6.4% ABV, 65 IBU
The founders of both Double Mountain and Solera Brewery have deep roots in the Midwest heartland. But things once familiar change. Old dirt roads get paved, and houses get built in cornfields. Sometimes you eat the bar, other times the bar eats you. Their collaboration IPA, Iowa Bar Fight, is brewed with Citra and Mosaic hops plus Strata hops for a brawl of sticky citrus and resinous tropics, finishing aggressively balanced and dry.
Double Mountain Hop Lion IPA
6.7% ABV, 65 IBU
“Tropic resin, tangerine / Petrichor and evergreen / Fill your chalice, fill it wide / Then pass it upon the left hand side” — so states Double Mountain Hop Lion hype. Hmmm … Double Mountain founder Matt Swihart and lead brewer Matt Coughlin are music freaks; Hop Lion’s bottle sports Jamaican colors and “left hand side” … could it be a nod to British Jamaican reggae band Musical Youth? Whatever. This IPA is delicious with bitter, citrus peel like aroma and gritty, malty, earthy, and tangerine flavors, mon.
