Peaks and Pints Tournament of Beer: Northwest Ambers April 20
PAPPI THE GREY: Welcome back, ladies and gentlemen, Wizards, Elves, and Dwarves, to the 2024 Peaks and Pints Tournament of Beer: Northwest Ambers from the historic Proctor District in beautiful Tacoma, Washington. I’m Peaks & Pints co-owner Pappi the Grey and I’m here to guide your though yesterday’s Second Round action, then take the rest of the weekend off — if you call drinking 20 barleywines at the Parkway Tavern as a day off. OK, four Second Round games remain and will battle Monday. Let’s get to yesterday’s winners. …
Friday, April 19, Second Round Northwest Ambers Games Results
GAME 1, NORTHERN WASHINGTON REGION
Rainy Daze Brewing Test Drive Amber (#10 seed) vs Triplehorn Brewing Folkvang Red (#15 seed)
Rainy Daze Brewing’s Test Drive Amber didn’t test anything yesterday morning. Instead, it shot ahead in votes as if it was loaded into a Viking catapult, set on fire, and shot over the Puget Sound toward Triplehorn Brewing in Woodville. Around 11 a.m., Triplehorn Brewing had enough. They started gaining votes as if Folkvang Red rode horseback to Kenmore, boarded Viking vessels, sailed down Lake Washington, through the Ballard Locks, rowed across Puget Sound, through Agate Passage, up Liberty Bay, and then set on fire and lobbed up the hill to Rainy Daze. Once the smoked cleared, Folkvang Red had 53 Percent of the vote and looking forward to much needed rest for their Saccharification 16 game.
GAME 2, SOUTHERN WASHINGTON REGION
E9 Brewing Rowdy & Dick Amber (#1 seed) vs Top Rung Brewing Box Alarm Amber (#8 seed)
The early morning hours were all about Rowdy & Dick & votes. E9 Brewing had a commanding lead until Top Rung Brewing sounded the Box Alarm and doused E9’s amber with fire hoses, which was ironic since Rowdy & Dick were the last two fire horses in pump-truck service at Engine House No. 9 — the former home of E9 Brewing. By 5 p.m., E9’s huge lead was diminished and the two South Sound breweries began trading lead changes. About 9 p.m., Top Rung owner Casey Sobol, a fire chief in Thurston County, climbed up to the top rung of a ladder, rang the fire bell, and watched the city of Lacey rally behind their beloved brewery. At the midnight buzzer, Top Rung had defeated the two time Tournament of Beer champion E9 Brewing with 52 percent of the vote and a slot in the Saccharification 16.
GAME 3, NORTHERN OREGON REGION
Gigantic Brewing Mecha Red (#11 seed) vs Double Mountain Brewery I.R.A. (#3 seed)
Continuing with the early lead theme, Double Mountain Brewery had more than double the votes over Gigantic Brewing until the afternoon when Mecha Red … well … followed a similar route as Gort, a giant robot from an alien race of robot enforcers who have been empowered to destroy humanity if we don’t heed their warnings. Double Mountain didn’t heed. While Gigantic did close the gap, Double Mountain’s I.R.A. never gave up the lead and end up with 59 percent of the vote.
GAME 4, SOUTHERN OREGON REGION
Three Creeks Brewing Firestorm Red (#12 seed) vs Kobold Brewing Brimstone Red (#13 seed)
Kobold Brewing’s Brimstone Red was the only distant beer in the morning to overtake its opponent in the afternoon. At 6 a.m., it had 23 percent of the vote. At 3 p.m., it had 60 percent. At the buzzer, it had 57 percent of the vote over Three Creeks Brewing‘s Firestorm red and a slot in the Saccharification 16.
Let’s weed through the malts. The following are advancing to the Saccharification 16:
Triplehorn Brewing Folkvang Red (#15 seed)
Top Rung Brewing Box Alarm Amber (#8 seed)
Double Mountain Brewery I.R.A. (#3 seed)
Kobold Brewing Brimstone Red (#13 seed)
