A rare June weather event with two back-to-back atmospheric rivers hit the Pacific Northwest on Monday bringing record-breaking rainfall and leaving more than 200 000 people without power. According to meteorologists, the storms were fueled by the remnants of a former tropical storm in the West Pacific Ocean, with the first of two waves of rain pushing into the region on Sunday. This first atmospheric river, the more potent of the two, impacted the region yesterday and the second one last night. Today, a front will move onshore over the Pacific Northwest and inland to the Northern Intermountain Region and weaken by tomorrow. The system will produce additional rain over parts of the Pacific Northwest. Any winter jacket put away for the season has almost certainly is still hanging on hooks by front doors. Peaks & Pints suggests grabbing a dark, rich, and flavorful stout, or five, for warmth. Stop by our craft beer bar, bottle shop and restaurant in Tacoma’s Proctor District and enjoy our in-house flight, Peaks and Pints Beer Flight: Chilly June Stouts.
Peaks and Pints Beer Flight: Chilly June Stouts
Timber Strawberry Brûlée
6% ABV
The plaid-wearing outdoors enthusiast Jason Stein would leave his Upper West Side apartment in New York City and travel to Long Island to homebrew barrel-aged imperial stouts and barleywines in his parents’ garage. He eventually called his talent Timbers Ales. From his Snack Stout Series comes Strawberry Brûlée, which uses the base recipe of Pallet Brûlée, which has then been conditioned on maple syrup, coffee, and strawberries.
Schenker Quiet Shadows
7% ABV
After running one of the most notable beer programs in the country at Torst NYC, then running the brewhouse at Folkbier in Brooklyn, Joey Pepper-Mellusi took his homebrewing skills and opened Schenker Beer Company. Speaking of Timber Ales, Jason Stein collaborated on Schenker’s Quiet Shadows, an American stout brewed with a base of Maris Otter malt, malted Red Wheat, and a variety of different specialty malts. After fermentation, the beer is conditioned on a blend of different vanilla beans.
Crux Stout
7.7% ABV
Stouts have a rich, deep and dark history — dating back more than 400 years in Europe as a strong porter. Sure, Crux Fermentation Project’s “Stout” is classically dark, but close your eyes and take a sip. You’ll likely be surprised by how easy it is on the palate with notes of caramel, chocolate, and roasted coffee driven by a wonderfully nuanced blend of dark crystal, black, roasted and chocolate malt.
Breakside Shasta Taffy
14.6% ABV
A collaboration with Salt and Straw — the Portland, Oregon, ice cream moguls founded in 2011 and still run by cousins Kim Malek and Tyler Malek — Breakside Brewery’s Shasta Taffy is a rich bourbon barrel-aged stout favored with classic sundae shop-type flavors, with lots of chocolate malt expression and soft vanilla character from the wood.
The Bruery Black Tuesday
19.4% ABV
Born from arguably the most miserable day in the history of The Bruery, Black Tuesday quickly became legend and lore in the craft beer community. A 16-hour brew-day, overflowing mash, burns from scalding water and frustration resulted in the base for this now legendary imperial stout. Rue was so angry with the beer that he condemned it to bourbon barrels for a year. The result? The most decadent of ales, developing deep, warming notes of vanilla, caramel, dark chocolate, bourbon, dark fruit, and singed oak.
