Fresh is best, they say, and beer is no exception. Brewing with fresh ingredients is important for flavor and quality, and hops are among the most celebrated — especially in the Pacific Northwest where most of the nation’s hops are grown. The hop harvest is like Christmas in August, though the harvest extended well into September as fresh hop beers are still arriving to Peaks & Pints craft beer bar, bottle shop and restaurant in Tacoma’s Proctor District. Typically, hops are harvested, dried, and converted into pellets that’ll stay usable for years. Brewers are on the clock with fresh hops, though, which are available only once a year, and need to get thrown into the brew immediately. Like cooking with fresh versus dry spices, the fresh hops have higher amounts of water, so you need more of them than the dry stuff. Wet hop beers tend to taste less bitter than dried, with a fresher, more herbal flavor profile. Today, marks our final Fresh Hop Friday and fresh hop beer flight. Stop by Peaks and continue to taste the freshness with Peaks and Pints Beer Flight: Final Fresh Hop Friday 2024.
