SPAGHETTI ROCK
Italian rock band Heavy Wood incorporates elements of 1970s classic blues-rock rhythms as well as fast country tunes that chug along like something off an early Old 97’s album. They throw in feisty fingerpicking and old-world Gypsy raucousness. Guitarist/singer Roberto Cavallo grew up in Faggiano, in the southeast of Italy, and drummer Matteo Flori comes from Abbadia San Salvatore in the Tuscany region. Seattle guitarist/singer Nate Kantner moved to Italy to rock with Cavallo and Flori, producing a sound described as Ennio Morricone meets AC/DC meets Gogol Bordello. Catch heavy wood with Tacoma’s Zook and special guests at 8 p.m. in The Valley.
PREFUNK: You might have spotted former football player Mike Besser wearing a keg costume at a beer festival, slinging craft beer for Top Rung brewing Company in Lacey, or chatting up movers and shakers in the craft beer world. Either way, Besser is definitely a beer dude about towns. He’s about to be a one-town beer dude. Besser, also known as BrewDad, has purchased NW Caps N Taps bottle shop and taproom in Bonney Lake. As of 11 a.m. today, the popular craft beer joint along Highway 410 will become BrewDad’s of Bonney Lake, with Besser at the helm filling growlers, popping bottle caps and serving hot dogs.
CATCH THE COMEDY BUG
Remember that time in high school when your parents went away? You know, plot line of every teenage movie ever made — except this time, you blew up the house. Standing in the ashes as your parents roll up, what do you do? Say it with us now — iiiiiimprovise. Take notes at 8 p.m. during the Comedy Open Mic at the Tacoma Comedy Club.
PREFUNK: You know the story. Manny Chao was Mac & Jack’s microbrewery’s first employee, where for five years he washed equipment and sold kegs on commission. After his shift at Premera Blue Cross, Roger Bialous would meet Chao at the Fiddler’s Inn in the Seattle neighborhood of Wedgewood, where the two eventually hatched a plan to open a brewery and its flagship beer: Manny’s Pale Ale. The two spent the summer of 2002 making Manny’s Pale ale on a half-barrel homebrew setup, distributing their Georgetown Brewing beer to friends. In 2003, they sold their first keg to the Latina Pub in Seattle. The rest is history. From 6-9 p.m., The Swiss Restaurant & Pub will pour eight Georgetown beers and raffle off the brewery’s swag.
JAZZ TRIO IN TACOMA
D’Vonne Lewis is the grandson of the late great “Godfather of Rock and Roll/Soul,” the Pacific Northwest Hall of Famer and Hammond B-3 organ legend Dave Lewis. Because of Dave Lewis, Seattle’s 1950’s entertainment scene started on the path to desegregation. That’s awesome. But, D’Vonne Lewis can hold his own. The self-taught drummer with a background in gospel, funk and R&B. was awarded outstanding soloist at the Essentially Ellington Jazz Festival for the years of 2000, 2001, and 2002, as well as the Seattle Jazz, Earshot Jazz Golden Ear Award for Emerging Artist of 2006. Catch D’Vonne Lewis’ jazz power trio at 8 p.m. in the B Sharp Coffee House.
