Share

TUESDAY, JULY 12 2016: South Sound events + craft beer …

The Grand Cinema + Local Boys Tap Room = VIVA craft beer!
The Oly Taproom + Three Magnets Brewing = Viva Olympia!

VIVA FILM

In the past year, actor Hector Medina has starred in two of Cuba’s biggest international coproductions. He played Yunisleidi, the transgender love interest in the controversial El Rey de la Habana. And now he stars as Jesús in Viva, which screens at 1:45 and 6:45 p.m. in The Grand Cinema as part of the Tacoma Pride Festival. Jesus is a hairdresser for a troupe of drag performers in Havana, but dreams of being a performer. When he finally gets his chance to be on stage, a stranger emerges from the crowd and punches him in the face. The stranger is his father Angel, a former boxer, who has been absent from his life for 15 years. As father and son clash over their opposing expectations of each other, this film becomes a love story as the men struggle to understand one another and become a family again. After the evening screening expect a performance by Mulan Rouge and a discussion guided by Mulan and the Pierce County Aids Foundation.
PREFUNK: This past winter Bobby Holstein and Trevor Jones opened the Local Boys Tap Room next door to Jones’ Local Boys Fruit and Produce a few car lengths from the steady traffic on the Purdy Bridge. Since then they have become Gig Harbor’s largest collection of Washington craft beer and cider, bumping up their taps to 28, adding an outdoor beer garden and filling their cooler to the max with bottle of Washington beer. At 2 p.m. they hit a new mark — their first “brewer’s night.” Sales executive Mike Lay and his No-Li Brewhouse represent will tap five kegs, offer special tasting flights, hand out swag and applaud crazy deals on No-Li growler fills.

AH, SUMMER

Oly Taproom celebrates “summertime” with an evening of live music and hard root beer floats. Olympia musicians jazz trumpeter Andy Omdahl and guitarist Tarik Bentlemsani perform live at 7 p.m. with tasty adult root beer floats o’plenty.
PREFUNK: Experience a special evening of tasting Three Magnets Brewing’s beers fresh from the bottle in support of Olympia runner Marisha Kasjan’s fundraising efforts for The Teaching & Learning Collaborative. This charity group was selected for the Wine & Dine Half Marathon weekend in November, and all funds raised by their participants will support professional development programs for youth PreK-12 in mathematics, engineering and science. Kasjan is about halfway through to her “Run For Pi” goal of raising $628 by Aug. 31. She’s training for the half marathon in November too. For $10, guests may select samples of 10 different beers, and will also have the opportunity to meet and chat with Three Magnets brewer Jeff Stokes and Kasjan, from 6-8 p.m.
