The Motopony frontman, fashion designer, artist, poet, writer and former crown prince of T-town’s hipsterdom returns to Tacoma for a show at Jazzbones. Daniel Blue could be called a rock star, if touring the world, including performing at the Sundance Film Festival, and recording a solo record at Abbey Road is a prerequisite. Catch Blue with Laughter Train and Sporty Lee at 8 p.m. Welcome back, Daniel.
PREFUNK: E-9 Brewery brewers start with a fruit brew that is ideal for wild yeast and bacteria. Wild yeast eats the sugars and produces alcohol along with funky and complex flavors. The bacteria feast on complex carbs and create lactic acid, the sour in sour beer. The beer is then added to used wine barrels, where the wood’s cellulose provides an additional food source for the bacteria and also a dark environment for the beer to nestle in for a few months and get tart. Finally, E-9 blends the beer to form one final gorgeous product and they serve it today at the annual Sourfest along with rare sours from around the world, including rare and tart treats from Monkish, Lambic X, Lost Abbey, Logsdon, Ducato and many more — plus E-9’s Golden Berry Wild, Nefelibata (Batch 2), Pasadena with Love, Rhubarb Wild and Bing Cherry.
THE FAME RIOT
You’ve seen The Fame Riot, right? Two glam-rock brothers donning sparkles, scarves and messy long hair and drawing inspiration from genre-hoppers such as Foxy Shazam and dance-rock like Hot Chip, with an impeccable pop sheen. And the music — so catchy! If you haven’t seen this Tacoma band explode with new wave synth, pop hooks and steadfast club beats, catch them with Twink the Wonder Kid at 9 p.m. in The Valley.
PREFUNK: Behind Fox Island Grocery & Deli sits an oasis for craft beer — Zog’s. It’s where wood and rock and waterfalls meet craft beer. From 2-6 p.m. the sold-out, 2nd Annual Zog’s Summer Beer Fest goes down to benefit the Fox Island Citizens Patrol. If you have a ticket your in for craft beer treats, including the new Pale Rye-der from Fox Island Brewing.
THE BLOB
Just when you thought you’d seen the last of a certain flesh-eating, amoeba-like jelly monster, The Blob returns to the big screen. The Capitol Theater will screen the 1988 version directed by Chuck Russell (Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors) and co-written by Frank Darabont (Walking Dead) at 9 p.m. The Blob is a consistently exciting mix of humor and gore that lives up to, and probably surpasses, the original version starring Steve McQueen back in ’58. This time around, bad boy Kevin Dillon is the unlikely hero who, with the help of gal-pal Shawnee Smith, must fight the big pink blob and the unsavory government agents who have come to “contain” it.
PREFUNK: The “Artesian” in Tumwater Artesian Brewfest refers to the history of artesian water being used in Olympia Beer and the Olympia Brewing Company’s advertising campaign depicting “mythical Artesians” that control the water supply. Olympia beer will be poured from 1-8 p.m. as well as 47 Northwest craft beers — including Thurston County’s own Cascadia Homebrew, Fish Brewing, O-Town Brewing, Three Magnets Brewery, Triceratops Brewing and Top Rung Brewing — at the Tumwater Valley Golf Course Driving Range. Expect a ton of games, too.
