DR. JOHN
Dr. John (aka Malcolm Rebennack, Mac, the Night Tripper) is, to say the least, a living blues legend and progenitor of swamp rock, psychedelic blues and whatever else you want to call it. He released many classic albums (Gris Gris, most notably) and a string of notable singles (“Right Place, Wrong Time”). He began his career as a session musician, lending his trademark piano playing to records produced by Phil Spector, and later on, albums by Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones. The good doctor will perform his swampy, soulful, funky “voodoo” music at 7:30 p.m. in the Pantages Theater.
PREFUNK: Once again the good folks at the Washington State Fairgrounds asked themselves, “How can we possibly make our amusement park any better (besides giving us a lifetime pass so we can ride the Scrambler)?” By allowing Oktoberfest Northwest to consume the Events Center, that’s how. It’s crammed full of German food, wiener dog races (!), Hammerschlagen and beer pong, live polka and accordion music, and six German beers for your mouth-hole. This is what heaven looks like. Kicks off at noon.
FUZZ EVIL
Nerdist notes, “If you are looking for something with a classic metal vibe, check out Fuzz Evil. These guys play riff-heavy, reverb-infused metal that sounds like they’d be a killer opening act for Led Zeppelin.” With a name like Nerdist you have to believe every word. The Arizona fuzzapocalypse band will crank their upbeat stoner metal, a la Black Sabbath, MC5, Clutch, Monster Magnet and The Stooges, at 9 p.m. in The Valley. Joining the fuzz-laden songster will be Tacoma’s own rockers Halcion Halo.
PREFUNK: Zog’s is one of the bars that led Fox Island into the craft beer revolution. OK, it’s the only one, but it’s bitchin’ cool. We’ve never attended their Oktoberfest celebration, but we’ll endorse anything these folks do, sight unseen. We don’t have all the details, but it will be at 7 p.m. There will be three Ayinger beers on tap — Ayinger Oktober Fest-Märzen, Ayinger Celebrator Doppelbock and Ayinger Bräu-Weisse Hefeweizen — and a limited quantity of Oktoberfest glasses. And, of course, German-style brats to accompany the biers.
NORTHWEST BLUES
A Northwest rock legend (“I’m in Love With An Angel”) and Washington Blues Society Lifetime Achievement Award winner, Little Bill can still knock ’em dead. He never wastes a note, whether it’s on ’50s classics such as “Route 66” or one of his originals, “Goin’ Back to Oakland.” Guitarist Rod Cook is known for his stylistic versatility and soulful, melodic playing. He’s most recognized for his work with folk/funk, Americana artist Laura Love in the 1990s and collaborations with Tacoma singer/songwriter Vicci Martinez. Little Bill and Rod Cook will jam from 7:30-10:30 p.m. at G. Donnalson’s in Tacoma’s Proctor District.
PREFUNK: Fresh hop season is a special one, and a short one at that. Edison City Alehouse’s Fresh Hop Festival celebrates beers brewed with fresh hops from the vine, which deliver an unparalleled hop character. As one of the main ingredients in beer, whole cone hops should be celebrated. Expect 15-plus fresh hop craft beers at tonight’s event, including goods from Fremont, Cloudburst, Old Schoolhouse and Breakside. Stay fresh from 5-11 p.m.
TELLURIDE MOUNTAINFILM
Adventure. For some, it is an irrepressible welling in the chest that will never go away no matter how many lakes canoed, rock faces climbed, horizons paddled after, peaks scaled, or miles of trail hiked. For others, adventure is something to marvel at — a celebration of man’s achievements. Most folks tend to admire the adventurers of the world, whether they are adventurers of the mind, the spirit or of the physical world. The touring Telluride Mountainfilm lands at the Capitol Theater at 7 p.m. Sponsored locally by the Olympia Mountaineers, Telluride Mountainfilm is dedicated to educating, inspiring and motivating audiences about environments, cultures, issues and adventures. Climbing, biking, snowsports — it’s all up on the big screen, looming high and making you feel bad for sitting on your duff almost all year long. If you need inspiration to get out more often (as if this little tidbit isn’t enough), these gorgeous images should do the trick.
PREFUNK: As you all know, Olympia Arts Walk is tonight and tomorrow afternoon in downtown Olympia, which means more art than you can shake a paintbrush at, tons of people crowding the streets in costume and character, and music at every downtown Olympia venue. Three Magnets Brewing Co. sits right in the thick of it hosting art by Rose Marguerite Josie, and releasing Citra Wet Hop, Mosaic Wet Hop and Rain IPA in bottles.
