RABBIT WILDE
Though all four members of Rabbit Wilde grew up running around wooded areas of the same small town in the farthest Northwest corner of Washington state, brothers Zach and Nathan didn’t meet Miranda, the third founding member, until they had all ended up in New York City. This kind of backyard folk seasoned by the edge, polish and fervor of big-city inclinations is at the root of their high-energy sound and stage presence. The group revamps classic string band instrumentation with homespun percussion and the unique integration of six-string ukulele and Jillian Walker on cello. With their widely varying influences, three distinct vocal styles and copious amounts of foot-stomping, they demonstrate a sound and presence that’s at once original and familiar, appealing to audiences of all generations and genres. PREFUNK: Sure, there have been many Oktoberfests in the South Sound, buy Oly Taproom hosts its second annual Oktoberfest Extravaganza and it deserves special attention for its overwhelming Germanity. We’re talkin’ das boot drinkin’, das pizza eatin’, das pretzel necklace wearing, and plenty-o-festbiers from noon to 9 p.m. Bonus: the first 100 people through the door will receive a custom Oly Taproom “Das Boot” with his or her choice of draft festbier.
DEATH AND THE MAIDEN
Ariel Dorfman’s political drama Death and the Maiden opened on Broadway in 1992, starring Glenn Close, Gene Hackman and Richard Dreyfuss. The film featured Sigourney Weaver and Ben Kingsley … and we bet you’ve never even heard of it, right? Thanks to Pacific Lutheran University, we’ve a chance to figure out why this might be the most important play you never saw. Directed by Dane Ostlie-Olson, it’s a dark drama, which from the very beginning delves into the nature of guilt and questions how we trust other people. In its tense locked room setting Death and the Maiden forces the audience to decide who is right and who is wrong and then to live with the consequences of that decision. See the evil, forgiveness and justice at 7:30 p.m. in Studio Theater at the Karen Hille Phillips Center on PLU’s campus.
PREFUNK: Rainy Daze Brewing officially opens its new digs in Sound Brewery’s old space at 650 NW Bovela Lane in Poulsbo at noon, which means full-time tasting room! Owner Mike Montoney will be able to brew far more beer in Poulsbo as he goes from a 1.5-barrel system to Sound’s seven-barrel system. The food truck will park at 3 p.m.
TACOMA FILM FESTIVAL
