MONDAY, OCT. 31 2016: South Sound events + craft beer
Top of Tacoma + Parkway Tavern = Halloween
G. Donnalson’s + Pint Defiance = Halloween
HALLOWEEN PAIRING OPTION NO. 1
Top of Tacoma Bar and Café is cool. So cool those Weekly Volcano readers have voted it the Best Bar in Tacoma numerous times. But Top’s top-dog status has nothing to do with the fact that it won so many awards. Top was the best before it was voted the best. For cool to be recognized as cool it must be unrecognized cool first. Neighborhood regulars, the Tacoma music scene, college coeds and bearded longshoremen call this place their unofficial living room, chowing down on the tasty grub and throwing back well-craft drinks and craft beer. The Top hosts a Halloween party at 8 p.m. They’ll pour $3 micros all night.
PREFUNK: Mephistopheles is the crafty shape shifter, the second fallen angel; he who does not love light. Herein he patiently lies, waiting and willing to do your bidding, but for a price. Enter into his darkness, a tangled and intricate labyrinth of bittersweet rapture. Enter into the Parkway Tavern. The Tacoma Northslope craft beer tavern hosts scary beers from Avery Brewing, including the demonic Mephistopheles, as well as Samael’s and The Beast — all with very high alcohol by volume percentages. Because it’s Monday, the Parkway will also have its coveted Randall flowing with no doubt some scary goodness. It’s Halloween, so don a costume — maybe a Rogue Dead Guy hat and a pen snug on the ear. Witching hour is 6 p.m.
HALLOWEEN PAIRING OPTION NO. 2
As noted earlier, it’s Halloween. If you’ve got kids, this means you probably need to find someplace to take them trick-or-treating. This being the case, and putting what you learned as a kid to good use, go where the goods are plenty. Start at the annual Proctor Treats Halloween celebration from 4- 6 p.m. if you’ve got little ones — where the roads (or a road) in the historic Proctor District will literally be shut down for the sake of encouraging trick-or-treaters — and go from there. There’s a bounty to be had. Drop off the kids with a sitter and head back to Proctor at 8:30 p.m. G. Donnalson’s wine bar and restaurant hosts a costume contest and live blues. Pour yourself a delicious Cab and think about us next door scrubbing floors.
PREFUNK: If adult trick-or-treating were a thing, what would you hand out? Probably craft beer, at least that’s what Pint Defiance has on the docket. Beginning at 5 p.m., the specialty beer store and taproom will tap seasonal favorite such as Elysian Punkuccino Coffee Pumpkin Ale, pFriem Pumpkin Bier, Belching Beaver Pumpkin Milk Stout and others. The first 75 customers to order a pumpkin beer will walk away with a treat bag full of candy, prizes and beer schwag.
