Share

SATURDAY, NOV. 12 2016: South Sound events + craft beer …

Jazzbones + Peaks and Pints = Old So-Cal surf-punk and Old Embalmer

Libertine Tacoma + Wingman Brewers = Denizens of Tacoma

Rhythm & Rye + Three Magnets Brewing Co. = folksy goodness and deliciousness

AGENT ORANGE

Agent Orange is old, and so are you. You listened to them on a boombox, right? A real boombox, about the size of a microwave. A boombox in the parking lot of the bank where you went to skate on real skateboards, boards with trucks no wider than your fist. That boombox was toast long before you left for college, that skateboard obsolete, but not the old school, So-Cal surf-punk of Agent Orange. No way. Catch the band with Hilltop Rats and Ten Pole drunk at 8 p.m. in Jazzbones.

PREFUNK: With autumn officially upon us, it’s time to set our sights on a new season of craft beer. Yet our own personal vision is of no matter here. The mavens of microbrewed marketing have decided for us, collectively. It’s out with the Helles, the Hefeweizens, the Belgian Wits. Replacing them on the shelves, in descending levels of obnoxious, is the torrent of winter warmers, brown ales, and, of course, the Barleywine. A hard-hitting ale, often boasting a double digit ABV, Barleywines can range in color from amber to dark brown, but they consistently unload a complex bundle of over-ripened fruit, heavily-breaded malt, and alcoholic heat. Subtlety and nuance be damned, they are the blowhards of beer. Peaks and Pints is pouring Widmer’s Old Embalmer Barleywine Ale, a well-balance but fat delight with forward dark/dried fruits and sweetness and more dark fruits and a light grassy note on the backend. Our cooler houses many a Barleywine delight. Peaks and Pints opens at 11 a.m.

FALL HARVEST HOLIDAY SHOPPING

Christy Reedy entered Tacomans’ lives in 2004 when she opened O-Design Studio, an art and interior design business. She entered the rest of the world’s lives shortly after when she invented eco-friendly gourmet culinary salt and seasoning business Libertine Tacoma. Her salts and seasonings are freaking amazing, as are her other mix of modern and unique home and culinary items. From 2-6 p.m., Reedy presents a Fall Harvest Holiday Shopping pop-up store at 842 S. Sprague Ave. in Tacoma, featuring handcrafted goods and snacks. There will be a box for non-perishable food items for FEED 253.

PREFUNK: Wingman Brewers will re-release its Belgian Strong Dark Ale, the Stratofortress, and its new Dark Waters Imperial Stout — made with Bluebeard Coffee cold brew, Tanzanian cocoa nibs, smoked jalapenos and cayenne peppers — at its annual Denizens of the Dark festival from 2-11 p.m. in its Tacoma taproom. Wingman will also pour into cool 8-ounce glasses its 2016 Bourbon Barrel Aged Big Baby Flat Top, Sawbuck Oak Aged Barleywine and Noel, plus Brandy Barrel-aged Lost Abbey Angels Share, 2015 Lost Abbey Serpent Stout, Smaltz Brewing Genesis 20:20, 2016 Great Divide Barrel Aged Hibernation Barleywine, 2015 Scaldis Noel, 2016 Scaldis Noel, Port Brewing Santas Little Helper and Ecliptic Brewing Third Orbit Imperial Porter with cherries. After a few of these beers you may not care about the November weather or even read the thermometer.

THE JUNEBUGS

Imagine if you ran R. Kelly through a banjo. The Junebugs! Led by frontman and beard enthusiast Moses Barrett, The Junebugs combine high-energy pop with Portland folksy goodness and modern hip-hop. Wha? Seriously, the trio’s original tunes have a dreamy, sweet quality reminiscent of Neil Young and Iron & Wine, peppered with fiery banjo lines, yo. Catch them with Science! and Jessica Jones at 9 p.m. in downtown Olympia’s Rhythm & Rye joint.

PREFUNK: Wow, seems like just yesterday Three Magnets Brewing Co. was a newborn brewery, entering our lives. There may be some newer kids on the scene, but Three Magnets still remains one of the best. Yes, because it makes amazing beer, but also because it throws great parties at its downtown Olympia space. At 6 p.m., Three Mags celebrates its second anniversary with its 1st Anniversary Ale, 2nd Anniversary Ale, 2014 Sour Helsing Junction Single Barrel, 2014 Tart Cherry Helsing and 2015 Russian Imperial Stout pouring into 8-ounce commemorative glasses. Expect live music and hugs.
