SIGNED BOOK AND WINE AUCTION
Books, beer, and politics. It’s not the sexiest of three-ways, but it’s exciting all the same — at least in the humble opinion of Peaks and Pints. At 7 p.m., Pierce County Prosecutor and popular Northwest writer Mark Lindquist will sponsor and host his 8th annual Signed Book and Spirits Auction rally and fund-raiser for People for Prosecutor Mark Lindquist at King’s Books in Tacoma. The event will be all local — local authors, local wines, local spirits. Authors include Gov. Jay Inslee, U.S. Rep. Denny Heck, Maria Semple, Garth Stein, Jack Cameron, William Norris Turbyfill Ken Miller, Lindquist and others. Deputy Mayor Ryan Mello, Tacoma City Council members Anders Ibsen, Marty Campbell and Victoria Woodards, Sonics Guy Kristopher Brannon and others will be auctioning off items. Pierce County Sheriff media relations guru Ed Troyer will emcee the affair.
PREFUNK: With its bubby effervescence and tartness, the centuries-old Berliner Weisse style is making a comeback. Interest in this seldom-brewed (in the United States, anyway) style is back due to the overall rise in popularity of sour beers. 21st Amendment teams up with Florida’s Cigar City Brewing Company to release Golden Sunshine, a kettle-soured wheat ale with Valencia oranges. It’s an easy drinking, sharp, refreshing Berliner Weisse pouring out of Peaks and Pints‘ Western red cedar tap log. Peaks and Pints in Tacoma’s Proctor District opens at 11 a.m.
ADULT COLORING
We live in stressful times. We have to deal with a change in politics, racists, an endless steam of murderous gunmen, ISIS, waiting on the next Game of Thrones book — ugh! Fortunately, a new fad is in high gear that promises to relieve our anxieties and put us in a calm state of mind, and it’s not even Xanax. It’s coloring. Adult coloring books are incredibly popular right now. There’s a ridonkulous amount of YouTube videos regarding the subject, and people often post their finished works on social sites. At 7 p.m., Northern Pacific Coffee Company near Pacific Lutheran University will host an adult coloring book session. Head to NPCC, color your best dragons, beasts, heroes and villains and try to relax.
PREFUNK: What’s the difference between a Christmas beer and a winter beer? Well, the labels for Christmas beers are usually red and green, while winter beer labels tend to be blue and white. As far as style goes, though, there’s not much to differentiate them. In fact, neither is even an official beer style. It’s fair to say Silver City Brewery’s Old Scrooge Christmas Ale is a Christmas beer. Besides it’s red and green label and Scrooge reference, “Christmas” is actually in it’s name. Silver City unleashes Old Scrooge in 500ml bottles at noon in its Bremerton taproom. The Strong Ale is bound to delight the palate with notes of apple, cherry and apricot. Drink this dark, malty ale now or put it away for next year. It’s bound to only grow better with age.
PUNK ROCK
Stop Don’t Stop is an old school punk rock/hardcore/dirty rock and roll, female led, hard hitting in your face trip down memory lane. The band was originally formed in September of 2015, consisting of two transplants from Southern California, Jeff and Maggie Sheldon. In April of 2016, they teamed up with longtime Seattle street performer and former front man of the Juneau/Tacoma hardcore band Induce Vomit, Homeless Hendrix, and Pacific Northwest native son and longtime musician/producer Paul Chandler on bass guitar. Check them out with Symptoms, Jims and Forest Beutel at 8 p.m. in The Valley.
PREFUNK: Odd Otter Brewing Co. has a thing for otters. The ownership named their company, and most of their craft beers, after the carnivorous mammals in the subfamily Lutrinae. At 7 p.m., the downtown Tacoma brewery will host Rainier AAZK — zoo keepers, staff members, volunteers, and interns from Northwest Trek Wildlife Park in Eatonville — and their fundraising efforts to keep us surrounded in otters. Drop by Odd Otter at 7 p.m. and enjoy a fun night of beer drinking and raffling off prizes all in the name of otter conservation.
