Share

FRIDAY, JAN. 20 2017: South Sound events + craft beer …

Broadway Center + Peaks and Pints = Oregon craziness

Olympia Film Society + Three Magnets Brewing Co. = Olympia craziness

MARCHING TO A DIFFERENT DRUM

Will saxophone-playing stilt-walkers ever get old? Even over a decade later, no one throws a party like a punk-rock marching band. Portland-based MarchFourth is a big band spectacular, consisting of a brassy assemblage of saxophones, trombones, trumpets, and a raucous drum/percussion corps anchored by a wireless electric bass. The group is also accompanied by world-class stilt-walkers, executing acrobatics and spinning fire six feet up. Catch this craziness at 7:30 p.m. in Broadway Center’s Pantages Theater.

PREFUNK: Deschutes Brewery sales executive Norm Cartwright will bust through the Peaks and Pints door at 6 p.m. with the Bend-based brewery’s craft beers. He’s still whittling down the final craft line-up from a field of 87 beers, but Deschutes’ new Pacific Wonderland Lager, Red Chair Northwest Pale Ale and the 2015 and 2016 The Abyss Imperial Stouts will be on tap. Cartwright will raffle off cool camping equipment with the money benefiting Green Tacoma Partnership.

LEONARD COHEN

Director Murray Lerner, whose latter-days career consists largely of revisiting footage from the Isle of Wight concerts, presents a re-sequencing of Leonard Cohen’s 2 a.m. set from the 1970 festival’s final day. Exceptional live recording by Teo Macero does justice to the Army, Cohen’s band of (mostly) Nashville session vets, including fiddler Charlie Daniels and Songs From a Room producer Bob Johnston, performing a set list drawn from Cohen’s first three albums, closing on a funeral note with “Seems So Long Ago, Nancy.” Lerner solders things together in a narrative arc, breaking for new interviews with witnesses — Kris Kristofferson and Joan Baez — who cast Cohen as a musical sedative. Catch Leonard Cohen: Live at the Isle of Wright 1970 at 6:30 p.m. in Olympia Film Society’s Capitol Theater in downtown Olympia.

PREFUNK: Three Magnets Brewing Company celebrates today’s Inauguration with a “Guess Donald’s Impeachment Date” contest at 5 p.m. in its downtown Olympia taproom. The fun continues with the flick Idiocracy on the big screen, “$1 off pints of Rain IPA — our dreariest beer — all day long”, growler fill discounts, and CHEETOS® crusted fried chicken sliders. The whole shebang benefits Planned Parenthood.
