WEDNESDAY, MARCH 15 2017: West Side Story paired with Rosetta Kriek
When you think about it, West Side Story was the La La Land of 1961 — a musical love story that became a hugely popular Oscar contender. The adaptation by Robert Wise and original choreographer Jerome Robbins of the 1957 Broadway play that transposed Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet to the gangs of modern-day New York was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, winning 10 (a record for a musical), including best picture. The Grand Cinema will screen the original 1961 musical drama at 1:45 and 6:45 p.m.
PREFUNK: This might be fake news but Peaks and Pints believes Rosetta Kriek was the name of one of Maria’s homies in West Side Story. If reports are true, after Tony’s tragic death, Rosetta started an after school program on West Side Story Boulevard to help young women learn to sing and dance. That story line didn’t make the final cut, but word is the nonprofit sought to show women ways to feel pretty outside of the male gaze. It makes sense to drop by Peaks and Pints for a couple Ommegang Rosetta Krieks before the movie at The Grand. Brewed and blended by Ommegang’s sister brewery Liefmans in Belgium, Rosetta combines old (aged on cherries at least three years) and young Flemish brown ale (or oud bruin) with a lively and fruity kriek, or cherry beer. The blend, which was developed by Ommegang Brewmaster Phil Leinhart, results in a complex yet refreshing mahogany-brown brew that is an intriguing interplay of tartness and sweetness, much like the Rosetta Kriek character.
