Brew Five Three Questions with Barry Chan of Lucky Envelope
Barry Chan from the famed Ballard brewery Lucky Envelope Brewing will pour his culinary inspire beer at Tacoma Arts Live’s annual Brew Five Three Beer & Music Festival at Chambers Bay in University Place Saturday, Aug. 10, during Tacoma Beer Week 2024. Chan and his business partner, Raymond Kwan, will join 30 or so regional breweries and cideries on the giant lawn, as well as the delicious local restaurants and live entertainment — all against the stunning backdrop of the Puget Sound and Olympic Mountains.
Peaks & Pints will join the Brew Five Three drinking crowd Aug. 10, right after we record with the local Grit & Grain beer podcast, which precedes bands The Pazific, PLU’s Steel Pan Band, and Walker Sherman on the main stage. First, we want to know what we’re drinking that day. Hey Barry! Could you please answer these Brew Five Three questions. …
PEAKS & PINTS: What are you pouring at this year’s Brew Five Three?
BARRY CHAN: We’ll be pouring our Matcha Do About Nothing Hazy IPA, which is a collaboration with Japan’s Fukuoka Brewing and homebrewers Jeana Skiles and John Hocking. This beer was orchestrated as part of the Tacoma Beer Week celebrations. The other beer will be our refreshing Marionberry Blueberry Sour.
PEAKS & PINTS: Brew Five Three benefits Tacoma Arts Live’s arts educational programs that serve 40,000+ students, teachers, and parents annually in the South Sound. How does art play into Lucky Envelope’s culture?
CHAN: We are proud to make culturally inspired beers, and the accommodating art reflects that mission. We’re intentional in our design choices and use art styles that range from clean and simple to intricate and elegant art through commissions from local AANHPI artists.
PEAKS & PINTS: What will happen at your Olympics Kick-off Party Saturday, July 27?
CHAN: We’ll be celebrating the first day of the Olympics on July 27th in our tasting room with the release of four new beers: our French Pilsner, HRC-003 West Coast IPA, Vienna Lager, and a Thai Tea Spiced Sour. A food truck will be on site, too. If you look really closely at the televised Olympics audience, you may even get a glimpse of our very own Ray who will be attending the celebration in Paris.
Brew Five Three is one of many events happening during Tacoma Beer Week 2024, which runs August 9-18.
