Brew Five Three Questions with Jeff Stokes of Sig Brewing

Tacoma brewery Sig Brewing Company will be one of 30 or so regional breweries and cideries spread out on Chambers Bay giant lawn for the 2024 Brew Five Three Beer & Music Festival Saturday, Aug. 10. Presented by Tacoma Arts Live, Brew Five Three not only will offer splendor for beer nerds and novice drinkers alike, but also delicious local restaurants and live entertainment against the stunning backdrop of the Puget Sound and Olympic Mountains.

Peaks & Pints will participate as part of the local Grit & Grain beer podcast, which precedes bands The Pazific, PLU’s Steel Pan Band, and Walker Sherman on the main stage, as well as a drinking patron. First, we want to know what we’re drinking at Brew Five Three. We asked Sig Brewing Head Brewer Jeff Stokes three questions, including what beers Sig will be pouring at Brew Five Three.

PEAKS & PINTS: What are you bringing to Brew Five Three this year?

JEFF STOKES: We’re bringing Deal With Destiny, a cream ale brewed with Almond Roca. It’s the official beer of Tacoma Beer Week this year.

PEAKS & PINTS: Since Brew Five Three benefits Tacoma Arts Live’s arts educational programs that serve 40,000+ students, teachers, and parents annually in the South Sound, how has art played into SiG’s culture?

STOKES: Local artist Todd Mason has created 100 percent of our can designs so far and has been integral in our brand development. We like to be whimsical while staying approachable in our can designs. More often than not I pitch an idea and he makes it even better than I could have imagined. We owe a lot to Todd for creating a brand image we can all rally around and be proud of. And, yes, we are canning Deal With Destiny.

PEAKS & PINTS: You’re opening a new taproom in South Tacoma Wednesday, July 10. What can people expect?

STOKES: Our satellite taproom is nestled in the heart of South Tacoma Way’s bustling bar and restaurant district. This 21+ location is a taproom only but encourages outside food from our neighbors, including Howdy Bagel and Radnors Smash Burgers and Beignets. Small bites will be available on site along with 10 to 12 Sig beers and seltzers along with Pacific Northwest wine and cider options.

Brew Five Three is one of many events happening during Tacoma Beer Week 2024, which runs August 9-18.
