CURTAIN CALL
In 1981, Stephen Sondheim, Harold Prince, and George Furth embarked on Merrily We Roll Along, a musical based on the 1934 George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart comedy told in reverse: the characters, played by a cast of teenage unknowns, begin as disillusioned adults and end as starry-eyed adolescents. Though the original, much-ballyhooed production was panned by the critics and closed after just 16 performances, Merrily We Roll Along would go on to attain musical theater legend status. Best Worst Thing That Ever Could Have Happened alternately heartbreaking and euphoric documentary by original cast member Lonny Price features never-before seen footage of Prince and Sondheim at work on the show and revisits many of Price’s fellow actors, all of them united by this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Catch it at 2 and 6:50 p.m. at The Grand Cinema.
PREFUNK: Founded in 2013 in Bloomington, Illinois, Destihl Brewery makes not-so-typical brews. From rotating seasonals and sours to an array of Belgian Ales, Destihl does it all, and each beer has its own distinctive flair. Resting in Peaks and Pints’ cooler is Destihl’s WiLD SOUR Series Flanders Red, with the “wild” in the name technically refers to the yeast used, but the flavor earns the moniker as well. If you can get past the Robitussin medicinal red hue you’ll discover a strong tart sweetness, full of apricot, peach, cherry and plum notes. If your life depended on it you’d have to say black cherry rules this roost. Take a few home or go wild and pop one or two open inside Peaks and Pints.
HALFLINGS UNITE!
Geeks of the world, unite. You have nothing to lose but … nothing. Because your day has come. Now, instead of beating you up for playing Dungeons and Dragons in the library, they’re making a special night, just for you. A special two nights, in fact, just for you. Game ON! in Puyallup hosts Dungeons and Dragons Encouters at 5:30 p.m. the next two nights. We’d crack geek jokes, but we sort of envy your fantasy world at this point.
PREFUNK: Rainier Growlers craft beer taproom on Puyallup South Hill has Block 15 Brewing Co.’s Winter Solstice Haze on tap. This seasonal from the Corvalis, Oregon, is a hoppy winter brewed with 30% malted red winter wheat, which imparts a delicately sweet and tangy aroma, a silky mouthfeel, and a richer malt character than standard wheat malt. English ale yeast and a blend of piney, citrusy, and floral hops contribute notes of spruce, tangerine, stone fruit, grapefruit, and a dank herbal finish. It’s tasty.
