Tacoma musician Kim Archer picked the Peaks and Pints’ beer flight for Thursday, March 9, 2017.

When you feel the music, you feel the music. And Kim Archer and Ricky German are feeling the music. Again. Archer and German, talented musician and customer designer, respectively, will present Soul Revue II — The 70’s Edition, a reprise of their ’70s soul stage production, an audio and visual trip back in time when Marvin Gaye knew what was going on and Chaka Khan hung out with Rufus. Archer, German and McBride Cohen Management will fill the Pantages Theater with Motown, Stax Records and Philly Soul and will converge on the Pantages stage at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 16. A 6:30 p.m. cocktail hour in the lobby complete with DJ and 1970s photo booth kicks off the night; 1970s attire encouraged. Archer, a Peaks and Pints pal, loves IPAs as much as soul music. We thought it would be fun to allow Archer to takeover our daily beer flight for the day. Drop by Peaks and Pints, enjoy a little soul music and Craft Beer Crosscut 3.9.17: A Flight of Kim Archer.

Firestone-Walker-Easy-Jack-TacomaFirestone Walker Easy Jack

4.5% ABV, 47 IBU

Firestone Walker Brewmaster Matt Brynildson traveled to Germany and spent several days in the Hallertau region, the birthplace of hops dating back more than 1,000 years. There, he hung out at small family hop farms and worked with the farmers to secure an ample supply of Mandarina Bavaria and Hull Melon — two backbone hops for Easy Jack. This kick-back beer spotlights those spicy, leafy hops; plus a dose of oats smoothes out the sip. “This is an easy-drinking IPA with huge hop aroma,” says Kim Archer. “Easy Jack is definitely a poolside IPA.”

Silver-City-Tropic-Haze-IPA-TacomaSilver City Tropic Haze IPA

6.4% ABV, 50 IBU

Silver City Brewery has joined the haze craze with this silky-smooth (due to the use of oat or wheat in the malt bill) hazy IPA. The Bremerton brewery has the hop bill under lock and key, but not doubt they use the sexiest hops available to create the wondrous, tropical fruit flavor. “I love the tropical fruit flavor,” says Archer. “All the cool kids are drinking this one.”

Deschutes-Fresh-Squeezed-IPA-TacomaDeschutes Fresh Squeezed IPA

6.4% ABV, 60 IBU

Beer for breakfast? Yes please. Deschutes’ mouthwatering, delicious Fresh Squeezed IPA receives a liberal dosing of Mosaic and Citra hops for a mango, pineapple, orange and grapefruit morning fruit cup. While the initial flavors are sweet and fruity, a good dose of hop bitterness comes through near the end, keeping it all in perfect harmony. “Deschutes is one of my favorite breweries; I’ve been drinking their beers for a long time,” says Archer. “I’m not a sweet IPA drinker. I like my IPAs big and bold. Yes, Freeze Squeezed has sweetness to it, but it balanced with a fair amount of hops. Yum.”

Green-Flash-Tangerine-Soul-Style-IPA-TacomaGreen Flash Tangerine Soul Style IPA

6.5% ABV, 75 IBU

Known for its West Coast IPA, Green Flash has several hop bombs in its lineup. In 20014, the San Diego brewery jumped on the fruit train adding tangerine zest. The outcome is a juicy IPA that packs a punch. Aromas of orange slice candy and citrus rind go head to head. Pungent grapefruit and tangerine flavors — thanks to the zest, of course, as well as Citra and Cascade hops —are balanced with sweetness from American pale malts. “I’ll be honest, the name drew me to this beer,” says Archer, “but the tangerine and hops keeps bringing me back. Tangerine Soul Style IPA has a medium bodied with a satisfyingly dry finish. It’s a great summer beer, but luckily, this IPA is available all year.”

7 Seas Ballz Deep

8.4% ABV, 84 IBU

7 Seas Brewing’s Ballz Deep is Kim Archer’s go-to beer at Peaks and Pints. She loves it. She loves gentle woody, resinous hop aroma. She loves the grainy, caramel-sweet malts before dank pine and the faint berry fruitiness emerge. She loves the clean finish. She loves that this imperial IPA is easy drinking. “It’s my kind of IPA — big and bold,” she says. “Don’t get off the porch if you can’t handle it.”
