Holiday Hump Day with Huyghe Brewery

Huyghe Brewery produces Delirium Tremens in Melle, Belgium. Leon Huyghe purchased the brewery in 1906 and named it Brouwerij Mounterij den Appel. The brewery would eventually adopt the name of its founder: Huyghe Brewery. Indeed. The name of the Belgian brewery is Huyghe, not Delirium. Delirium Tremens debuted Dec. 26, 1988, more than 80 years after the brewery’s founding. Although it wasn’t Huyghe Brewery’s first beer, Delirium Tremens remains its flagship. According to legend, a tax collector felt himself gradually slipping into a state of unexpected drunkenness when he came up with the name, “Delirium.” Whether he saw pink elephants remains unknown. Delirium Tremens is one of the most popular Belgian beers, and for good reason. Its signature pink elephant logo and ceramic bottles have helped it become incredibly recognizable. The medium-bodied Belgian pale ale exhibits apple and pear aromas at the nose, and features banana, fruit, spice, and wheat flavors, which you’ll discover Dec. 19 at Peaks and Pints.

Delirium Noel and its bourbon barrel aged version, Delirium Noel Barrel Aged Buffalo Trace, will also flow from Peaks and Pints’ Western red cedar tap log Wednesday. You could buy Delirium Noel based on the outstanding reputation of Delirium Tremens. You could also buy it for the fantastic flavors of candy sugar, plums, white raisins and rum-macerated apricots this dark, 10 percent ABV Belgian ale delivers. Or you could buy it for the same reason we find ourselves picking up a bottle every year: there’s just no resisting a pink elephant in a Santa hat.
