SUNDAY, JUNE 19 2016: South Sound events + craft beer …
Modern dance + Odd Otter = Father’s Day
Strangely Alright + 99 Bottles = Father’s Day
TEN TINY DANCES
Instead of allowing choreographers to work within the infinite spaces and settings that dance allows, the fun of Ten Tiny Dances comes from its constraint: The short works must be performed entirely on a miniscule four-by-four-foot stage placed in the middle of a nightclub. Based out of Portland, the contemporary dance series has been adopted by many Northwest production companies, including Tacoma’s MLKBallet. Ignoring the in-the-round, up-close theater experience and the fact it’s held in a nightclub (6 p.m., Jazzbones), the coolest aspect of Ten Tiny Dances is the spatial constraint serves as a catalyst for creativity. Expect to see silly to serious improvised and rehearsed movement. As we reminded yearly: heckling and betting will not be allowed. All proceeds benefit Tacoma City Ballet’s financial-aid program.
PREFUNK: Mom? Mom is easy. She likes spending time with you. She likes brunch. She would love that new Coach bag … but she’s way too selfless to buy it for herself. On Mother’s Day, you can be the hero. Father’s Day is another story. Dad is not easy. Dad’s hobbies mostly involve television, not that we’re stereotyping or anything. And if Dad needs something, he buys it for himself (or tasks Mom with it). What the heck could Dad possibly want? How about happy hour prices on craft beer pints? That’s exactly what Odd Otter Brewing Company has planned today, which is rad because it won’t break the bank and won’t bore you to tears. The downtown Tacoma brewery typically has a Randall going on Sunday, but no word yet if that’s a go.
STRANGELY ALRIGHT
Strangely Alright is more than all right — the band is awesome. Its music is fun, timeless and real. Fronted by longtime Tacoma musician Regan Lane (Baby Knockors, Strypes, Groovy Times in Babylon, BrokenNess), take the Beatles and Super Furry Animals sprinkled it with some Bowie, Traveling Wilburys and Elvis Costello and add confessional lyrics a la John Lennon and Bob Dylan and you have the five-piece power pop band Strangely Alright. The band performs at 3 p.m. at the Meeker Days Festival in Pioneer Park in downtown Puyallup. Well, all right!
PREFUNK: It’s time to show your love for ol’ Papa Bear this Sunday. Along with a sweet card, spend an afternoon tasting delicious craft beer at 99 Bottles in Federal Way. Today kicks off a week-long beer flight at the craft beer store that includes Unibroue’s Ephemere Blueberry, Black Raven’s Redfeather Session Red IPA, Southern Tier’s Salted Caramel Imperial Stout and Small Town Brewery’s Not Your Father’s Root Beer (10% ABV).
