FRIDAY MAY 20 2016: South Sound events + craft beer …
Feuding perfume clerks + Razma Attack = Parkland party!
Brazilian folk + 7 Seas Brewing = Romperia
Golden oldies + Bike to Work Day = “Keep on Rollin’”
SHE LOVES ME
Pacific Lutheran University’s Theater Department presents “She Loves Me,” the charming 1963 musical adaptation of Miklos Laszio’s play “Parfumerie,” which later inspired the Tom Hanks-Meg Ryan feature “You’ve Got Mail.” Anyhoo, this intimate and touching show centers on two feuding perfume clerks who, unbeknownst to them, fall in love after answering the same “lonely hearts” advertisement. Catch the stage show at 7:30 p.m. in PLU’s Eastvold Auditorium.
PREFUNK: Wingman Brewers releases its Razma Attack at 6 p.m. in Northern Pacific Coffee Company in Parkland. Razma Attack is Wingman’s Berliner Weiss recipe brewed with a copious amount of raspberries. That finished beer is then blended with its house mixed culture Saison to provide a more complex Brett and Pedio backbone. Expect live music from Michael Gee, Kyle Gootkin and Tyler Zlatkus.
BRAZILIAN FOLK
Monoclub is a band from Sorocaba, Brazil, which combines Brazilian folk music with American country music — think Almir Sater and Renato Teixeira meet Wilco and Willie Nelson. The band is touring behind its new release, “Romperia.” Check out Monoclub with Accident Babies and Corina Marie at 8 p.m. in The Valley.
PREFUNK: As you know 7 Seas Brewing will open a Tacoma location this summer, featuring a ginormous production facility and a nifty taproom in the old Jet Equipment building near The Swiss. The Social Bar and Grill will give 7 Seas a giant hug from 6-8 p.m., pouring its Rude Parrot IPA and other 7 Seas beers and asking folks to bring food donations for Tacoma’s FISH Food Bank. Rumor is Chambers Bay Distillery will also be in the house.
SMOKEY JOE’S CAFE
Why are all these middle-aged people dancing and singing up the aisles of the Tacoma Little Theatre? Because “Smokey Joe’s Café” is a 42-song sweep on a golden-oldies station come to life. These are the songs you can’t believe you remember all the lyrics to (“Poison Ivy,” “Yakety Yak,” “Hound Dog”), songs you probably never knew (“Shoppin’ for Clothes,” “Some Cats Know”), and songs you love to sing along to (“On Broadway,” “I’m a Woman,” “Spanish Harlem”). This was popular music 30 or 40 years ago, when songs and almost everything else seemed simpler. Get ready for lots of guy-group choreography that flirts with self-parody, lots of beltin’ it out, lots of hair and lots of style at 7:30 p.m.
PREFUNK: It’s Bike to Work Day! And it’s not suppose to rain! On your way home stop by The Hub Event Space for a bicycle commuter party from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The Harmon Brewing Company will be pouring a special Bike Month beer. Appetizers will be offered. But remember to find your light! Once the sun goes down, you’ve got to bring your own source: a white in front for the “coming,” something red and moody behind for the “going.” We like ours to get all flashy, but that’s just personal taste.
