DESTINY CITY FILM FESTIVAL
The Third Annual Destiny City Film Festival kicks off today. The local film festival will be celebrating the art of cinematic storytelling from Aug. 26-27 at the historic Blue Mouse Theatre in Tacoma’s Proctor neighborhood. The program will include 18 dynamic films from around the world, filmmaker Q&As, and recognition of Jeffrey Palmer, whose script Split Costs won the short screenplay competition. At 7 p.m., the opening night film will be It Had To be You, a whimsical romantic comedy about Sonia (Cristin Milioti, How I Met Your Mother, The Wolf of Wall Street, The Mindy Project), who embarks on a journey of self-discovery after a sudden proposal and subsequent ultimatum from her boyfriend.
PREFUNK: Alex Dittmar, head brewer and owner of Airways Brewing, will drop by the North End Social Club at 6 p.m. with a bunch of Airways beer. That’s right; he’s taking time away from his brand spankin’ new brewing facility to share a little Sunjet IPA, Jumbo Juice IPA, Sky Hag IPA, Pre Flight Pilsner and Maylani’s Coconut Stout with you. Dittmar does swag, too. Boss Mama’s Kitchen food truck will park around 5 p.m.
POOL PARTY
While summer days are great for lounging, it’s the hot summer nights that will truly make memories. And nothing heats things up faster than a Zodiac Supper Club Pool Party with the Northwest’s premier all-Filipino Hall & Oates cover band, Little Donuts. In addition, DJs JLed and Donnyllama will spin yacht rock jams all night for those in board shorts and bikinis to take you away to where you’ve always heard it could be. This 21 and older party has a $5 cover. And remember, she’ll only come out at nights the lean and hungry type.
PREFUNK: Silver City Brewery’s Sesh Appeal Classic Lager is literally everything you could possibly want out of a smashable lager beer. Excellent flavor? Check. Light body? Check. German-influenced? Check. Comes in a can? Sextuple-check. In fact said cans will only be $3 today at the Bremerton brewery’s taproom. Sesh Appeal is a refined take on the classic Helles-style, with Hersbrucker hops and a touch of Mt. Hood hops for added sweetness. Vienna malt joins Pilsner malt to provide a light toasted note and a complexity that finishes crisp and clean. The $3 Sesh Appeal Can Party begins at noon.
KIM ARCHER
With a timeless vocal delivery only matched by her engaging stage presence, Kim Archer has been pleasing live music fans in our area since 2004. Archer’s powerful voice a la Janis Joplin and Chaka Khan gels perfectly with the sonic buzz of the guitar and groove from her talented band. She commands the stage playing her own original songs rooted in old school soul, funk and classic rock, sultry blues and ballads while remaining a master at giving choice cover tunes the “Kim Archer treatment.” Catch her at 7:30 p.m. in G. Donnalson’s in Tacoma’s Proctor neighborhood.
PREFUNK: Everyone has standards. Edison City Alehouse has seven — at least tonight when they pour seven Standard Brewing beers from the Seattle brewery. Standard Brewing is small. “It’s terribly small, tiny little brewery,” we think Author said in the 1981 film. “Rhode Island could beat the crap out of it in a war. THAT’S how small it is.” That not said, Standard brews some powerful, hop-heavy inebriants — including at least three IPAs. Drop by Edison City at 5 p.m. for the Standard beer or three.
