CHUCKY IN PROCTOR

In the world of horror movies, a filmmaker is lucky to have even one hit that transcends any kind of critical or financial success to become a genre classic. Writer-director Tom Holland had several, including Fright Night and Child’s Play, the later screening at 10 p.m. in the Blue Mouse Theatre as part of Anthony Dluzak’s monthly Friday Night Frights series at the Proctor District movie house. Child’s Play stars Chucky, a toy doll that becomes possessed with the spirit of serial killer Charles Lee Ray and terrorizes a young boy and his mother.

PREFUNK: Twenty years ago, brothers-in-law Adam Firestone and David Walker established Firestone Walker Brewing Company in a converted shed on the back-forty of the Firestone family vineyard on California’s Central Coast. Ten years later, after moving up the road to Paso Robles, the brewery celebrated its first decade with X (or 10), a trailblazing barrel-aged anniversary ale blended with input from local winemakers. Now comes XX, which is both a celebration and a culmination, marking Firestone Walker’s 20th anniversary on California’s Central Coast. Seventeen winemakers convened in late August to help create the blend for XX, which ended up as 40% Parabola Russian Imperial Oatmeal Stout aged in new oak and bourbon barrels, 20% Stickee Monkee Quad aged in bourbon and brandy barrels, 17.5% Velvet Merkin Oatmeal Stout aged in bourbon barrels, 12.5% Bravo Imperial Brown Ale aged in bourbon barrels and 10% Helldorado Blonde Barleywine aged in bourbon barrels. Drop by Peaks and Pints bottleshop/taproom/eatery in Tacoma’s Proctor District and grab a few bottles of this incredible craft beer.

FUNK AND SOUL

Get together eight sons of jazz trumpeter Phil Cohran, and of course some really cool is going to happen. The Chicago-based Hypnotic Brass Ensemble creates music ranging from hip-hop to funk, a little bit of world, and naturally, jazz. Well-composed, layered brass over a drum beat, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble’s music is hip, immersive, and the soundtrack for big city scenes. Check them out at 7:30 p.m. in the Broadway Center’s Rialto Theater.

PREFUNK: Autumn beer offers far more than nutmeg and allspice. The list of fall possibilities goes beyond dark German lagers and wet-hopped IPAs. We like a nutty brown ale or a malty red, and it’s around this time that we begin to crave craft beer loaded with rye. Edison City Alehouse in South Tacoma prepares for winter by tapping 13-plus fall-themed beers beginning at 11 a.m. We have our eye on Reuben’s Roasted Rye IPA, Three Magnets Wreathing Havoc Imperial Red Rye, Wingman’s Rosemary Rye IPA and Aslan Ginger Rye IPA.

TUCKER TALENT

Ethan Tucker has been touring and recording his music — a mix of folk, blues, pop and reggae — since he was 16. Though he was building a growing fan base on his own, things really started to turn when his music caught the ear of superstar Michael Franti after Tucker hounded him for years. Tucker, now 26, Tucker and his band will perform a collection of roots and reggae-infused, acoustic-flavored pop at 8 p.m. in the Tumwater spot Pints Barn.

PREFUNK: Portland’s favorite sustainable brewery, Hopworks Urban Brewery, has thrown its hat into the bottled winter seasonal beer game with an early release for their Abominable Winter Ale. According to Abominable hype, “This mythological beer emerges from the depths of our brewery every winter. Made with Cascade, Centennial and Simcoe hops and six organic malts, ‘A-Bomb’ has a complex floral, spicy and citrus hoppiness backed up by just the right amount of malt sweetness.” From 7-9 p.m., The Eastside Club Tavern will pour four variants of Abominable Winter Ale — cask, as a nitro pour, barrel-aged, along with the standard from the keg.
