MONDAY, APRIL 10 2017: Tacoma events paired with craft beer …
Blue Mouse Theatre + Peaks and Pints = La La Land and Blackjack
The Grand Cinema + Parkway Tavern = Lush
PASSION AND PURPOSE
La La Land is not for the cynical. Whiplash writer-director Damien Chazelle’s dazzling, ambitious modern-day musical is fresh yet nostalgic, paying tribute to song-and-dance classics such as “Singin’ in the Rain” and “Swing Time.” Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, pairing for the third time after Crazy, Stupid, Love and Gangster Squad, play a struggling actress and jazz musician who fall for each other after years of chasing their dreams in L.A. Their story is one of passion, purpose, and resolute optimism, even when the City of Angeles keeps beating them down. Check it out at 7 p.m. at the Blue Mouse Theatre.
PREFUNK: Every month Peaks and Pints invites a craft brewery to create a three-hour soundtrack off our Jukebox, pour its craft beer and award prizes during zany games. We call the Monday nights SudsPop. Warren Hellman of Firestone Walker Brewing Co. will pair his Paso Robles, California brewery’s Easy Jack Session IPA and Union Jack IPA with Blackjack card game, although no actual money is involved, there’s a chance to win big prizes like sweet Firestone Walker swag. We’ll also pour Firestone Walker’s Luponic Distortion No. 005 IPA just because.
BEAUTY SALON SIRENS
Shot in La Habana, Kiki Alvarez’s Venecia presents a Cuba where nothing seems to be happening and yet, perhaps because of its inconspicuousness, it is the center of the universe. Mayelín (Marianela Pupo), Violeta (Claudia Muñiz) and Monica (Maribel García Garzón) are catalyzed into a night of adventure when they receive their monthly beauty salon wages. Over the course of the night, they will grow to know each other better and collectively dream beyond their everyday reality. But these dreams will prove to be like butterflies, more resplendent in flight than in captivity. Presented as part of the Sister Cities Film Festival, Venice (Venecia) screens at 6:30 p.m. in The Grand Cinema.
PREFUNK: Fremont Brewing’s Lush IPA has been teasing that spring is on its way since January. Well, spring is here and Lush still smells wonderful, delivering fresh, clean grass and chopped white onion sprinkled with caramelized garlic and fresh orange skin. Its aroma isn’t the only attribute that nominated it as a sixth seed in Peaks and Pints’ Tournament of Beer: Washington State IPAs (Lush battles Maritime Pacific Imperial Pale Ale April 13), the taste is a damn delight with pine, grapefruit and mango dance on the tongue before herbal notes kick in. At 5 p.m., the Parkway Tavern runs Lush through its Randall loaded with hops.
