Blueberries. Who doesn’t love them? When we can keep the birds from eating the fruit, blueberries are one of the most rewarding edibles in the garden. They don’t take up a huge amount of space, and they are easy to grow in our area, given sun, acid soil, and plenty of water. And the plants are beautiful. Beer purists typically scoff at a brew that incorporates anything into its recipe besides water, malt, hops, and yeast. Offer them a beer with fruit in it and you’re bound to hear a speech on the German Beer Purity Law of 1516. But if one can get past traditionalist approaches to drinking beer, they might find that fruit can be a fantastic brewing ingredient — including blueberries. Stop by Peaks & Pints for our in-house blueberry beer flight, Peaks and Pints Beer Flight: Blueberries.
Peaks and Pints Beer Flight: Blueberries
Equilibrium Miami BerlinerVice
4.5% ABV
Here’s a Berliner weisse brewed for bikinis, sunshine, bad-boy cops, colorful drug lords, speedboats, and an entertainingly cheesy pastel-and-neon style. Equilibrium Brewery’s Welcome to the Jungle is a tart and funky wild wheat ale aged in oak barrels with special fermentation and wild yeast strains. Their Miami BerlinerVice is Welcome To The Jungle refermented on copious amounts of blueberry, passionfruit, and guava.
Prairie Blueberry Boyfriend
5.4% ABV
Prairie Artisan Ales’ Blueberry Boyfriend is a sour ale fling brewed with blueberries and lemon zest, which find a harmonious relationship with a slight tinge of that classic Prairie funk that you’ve come to know and love. The berry is strongly blueberry, but hints of strawberry, raspberry, and blackberry.
RaR Out of Order: Freeze’s Blueberry Birthday Surprise
6% ABV
The corporation funding cryogenics expert Victor Fries’ work shut down his experiments and, in the process, caused a horrible accident, errantly releasing coolants in his lab that did irreparable harm to Victor’s body’s chemistry. Transforming the former Dr. Fries into an ice-colored monstrosity, the coolants made it impossible for him to survive above freezing temperatures. To counteract this, Victor constructed a special, ultra-durable suit to keep his body alive and at the right temperature. He embraced his new persona and became Mr. Freeze. RaR Brewing’s Freeze’s Blueberry Birthday Surprise is their lactose sour base conditioned over blueberries, birthday cake batter, and vanilla ice cream.
Great Notion Double Blueberry Marshmallow Shake
9% ABV
Great Notion Brewing fluffed up their Double Blueberry Shake recipe with marshmallow flavor to make Double Blueberry Marshmallow Shake. This fruited sour is saturated with blueberry and the creamy vanilla scent adds a nice sweetness to keep this intense sour blueberry beer perfectly out of balance.
Crooked Stave Serenata Notturna Blueberry
12% ABV
Crooked Stave is a play on the word “stave” — one of many strong wooden slats, collectively bound together by metal hoops to shape a wooden barrel. The Denver, Colorado brewery’s name is a commitment to how closely it works with each barrel and embodies the love it puts into each beer. Wooden barrels are the focal point of the brewery and the beers it brews — specialty Brettanomyces-only, wild, sour, and barrel-aged beers. Serenata Notturna Blueberry is a barrel-aged golden ale with Washington state blueberries for a flavor of tart Brettanomyces, tart blueberries, and woodsy oak.
