Well, it’s that time of year again. Christmas. We all know what that means. Twenty-four-hour marathons of A Christmas Story on TBS. Gaudy lights tacked onto just about every house in the suburbs. Overcrowded stores and that annual homage to Charlie Brown’s puny little tree. Oh, and then there’s our favorite — Old Scrooge: A Silver City Love Story at Peaks & Pints, which will turn the first page at 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5. Like last year, the Silver City Brewery Christmas Party at Peaks & Pints will revolve around their Old Scrooge Christmas Ale, their classic old ale and English barleywine since 2009, replete with long boil time, cool fermentation, and extended aging. Old Scrooge Christmas Ale dark, malty ale offers notes of apple, cherry and apricot. Suffice it to say, it’ll warm your heart and entire body. In addition to Silver City’s Old Scrooge Christmas Ale 2024, and Bourbon Barrel Aged Old Scrooge Christmas Ale, Silver City will pour their Pils, Dark Lager and Ridgetop Red at Peaks & Pints tonight. In addition, Peaks & Pints presents an all-day flight of Silver City beer — a flight we’re calling Peaks and Pints Beer Flight Dec. 5: Old Scrooge’s Merriment.
Peaks and Pints Beer Flight Dec. 5: Old Scrooge’s Merriment
Silver City Pils
5% ABV
Silver City has brewed a new, year-round pilsner with grainy aromas intermingling with subtle hints of water cracker and a touch of honey. Like old friends sharing Christmas ghost stories by the fire, the sweetness and bitterness balance perfectly.
Silver City Ridgetop Red
6% ABV
Silver City Brewery’s Ridgetop Red has earned many GABF medals, and though it takes some unexpected turns on the tongue, it’s clear why it’s a winner. There’s a beer for everyone. Ridgetop Red is everyone’s beer. Full-bodied and smooth, this ale surges hits the tongue with grainy caramel sweetness before lifting into pear and passion fruit notes. It’s never overly sweet, but it also doesn’t completely dry out in the finish: A touch of bitter Liberty hops kick-in at the end, completing a well-balanced swallow.
Silver City Dark Lager
7.1% ABV
Formerly known as Wonderland Lager, Silver City’s Dark Lager is a blend of five different malts imparting a luxurious, deep color and a nuanced roast character that is both rich and inviting. This complexity is refined through five weeks of lagering at near-freezing temperatures, resulting in a remarkably smooth and well-rounded profile. German hops add a delicate touch of floral and earthy undertones, providing balance and depth to the malt-forward character.
Silver City Old Scrooge Christmas Ale
8.5% ABV
What’s the difference between a Christmas beer and a winter beer? Well, the labels for Christmas beers are usually red and green, while winter beer labels tend to be blue and white. As far as style goes, though, there’s not much to differentiate them. In fact, neither is even an official beer style. It’s fair to say Silver City’s award-winning Old Scrooge Christmas Ale is a Christmas beer. Besides the Scrooge reference, “Christmas” is in its name. The English barleywine is bound to delight the palate with notes of apple, cherry, and apricot.
Silver City Bourbon Barrel Old Scrooge
9.5% ABV
This holiday bourbon barrel-aged English barleywine offers up a rich aroma of toffee and sweet cherry, with a rush of warm vanilla, bourbon, and caramel malt to create an immaculate fireside drinking companion.
