In 2016, MIT graduates and friends Peter Oates and Ricardo Petroni opened Equilibrium Brewery in Middletown, New York. The two professional scientists became obsessed with New England hazy IPAs spending more time at Hill Farmstead Brewery and The Alchemist than their laboratory. Finally purchasing a homebrewing kit, Oats and Petroni strived to create scientifically balanced beer, which they did before brewing their first double IPA, named EQM, in 2015. It didn’t hurt they were trained in water chemistry. Since then, demand forced them to open a second site in Middletown to brew more cult-classic, scientific hazy beers — beers they like to drink. Today, Peaks & Pints presents another in-house flight of Equilibrium beer — a flight we call Peaks and Pints Beer Flight: Equilibrium.
Peaks and Pints Beer Flight: Equilibrium
Equilibrium Double Fractal Dragon Curve
8.5% ABV
The Double Fractal series brings you all the goodness of Equilibrium’s Fractal and Super Fractal beers, but … wait for it … in a hazy double IPA format. Double Fractal Dragon Curve combines their fractal fermentation, simple 2-row base malt bill, and a hop bill of Enigma and Citra. Expect notes of earthy dankness, white wine grapes, papaya, orange creamsicle and tropical fruit with and a very pronounced escalating brightness from their #EQjuice.
Equilibrium Energy Evolved
8.5% ABV
Einstein’s findings state that Energy (E) equals mass (m) times the speed of light (c) squared (2), or E=mc2. The secret of the equation revealed that mass and energy are different forms of the same thing. Equilibrium’s flagship beer MC² celebrates Einstein’s findings. Energy Evolved takes a double dry hopped MC² and adds a colossal dose of Galaxy hops to the dry hop, their energy treatment, and a touch of lactose for smoothness. Energy Evolved glows on its pour with a hoppy explosion of flavors such as ripe mango, orange juice, papaya, and passionfruit fruit leading into a full citrus portfolio that’s blended with notes of pineapple gummy bears and tropical push-ups. This beer is extremely creamy and pops with their #EQjuice finish.
Equilibrium Four Fours
8.5% ABV
A collaboration with J. Wakefield Brewing, Other Half Brewing, and Vitamin Sea Brewing, this hazy double IPA starts with a heavy base of oats and wheat before adding Idaho 7, Citra, and Citra Incognito whirlpool. It’s then dry-hopped with Citra, Strata, Galaxy, and Zappa hops. Dense haze pours into the glass with aromas of tropical mango, orange tang, assorted berry, and grape drink. Hoppy saturated flavors of dank mango orange juice smoothie, papaya chunks, and green Nerds candy are balanced by a hoppy bite and giant #EQjuice melon finish.
Equilibrium Tree of Life
11% ABV
A collaboration with Tripping Animals Brewing, Tree of Life imperial stout starts its life with a generous boil before coconut flakes, almonds, Mostra Ghostbear coffee, and Madagascar vanilla are added. This beer smells like walking into the most nostalgic bake shop. Aromas of deep fudge and just baked confections lead into flavors of thick chocolate fudge, crushed almond and marzipan, coconut truffle, that coconut candy bar with the blue wrapper, and woven notes of the perfectly brewed cup of Sunday morning coffee. The mouthfeel is viscous with balanced flavors throughout leading right back into the revolving cycle of your next sip.
