During the pandemic, Conrad Andrus left his five-year brewing job at Culmination Brewing to join head brewer Mat Sandoval at Modern Times Beer’s Belmont Fermentorium, a Portland location for the San Diego brewery. After Modern Times in Portland shutdown in February 2022, Andrus and Sandoval opened Living Haus Beer Co. in the shuttered Belmont Fermentorium with former pFriem Family Brewers’ Head Brewer Gavin Lord joining the partnership. The Living Haus trio transformed the space into a sleek, modern brewery and taproom while keeping the building’s character, which dates to the 1930s. Saturday, Living Haus celebrates their first anniversary with special pours and festivities at their Portland taproom. In celebration, Peaks & Pints presents an in-house flight of Living Haus beer — a flight we’re calling Peaks and Pints Beer Flight: Living Haus.
Peaks and Pints Beer Flight: Living Haus
Living Haus Frank
5.2% ABV
“Frank Rossello was a generous and fun-loving human being who raised two boys with his wife Deborah in Sylmar, CA,” states Living Ahus. “He loved teaching his sons, along with his nieces and nephews, about sports, music, and inside jokes. He had the best laugh, and it was contagious.” Living Haus celebrates Frank by naming their Mexican lager after him. Brewed with two Idaho grown pilsner malts with a dash of Vienna malt and a whole bunch of flaked corn, Living Haus layers light amounts of Hallertau Mittlefruh and Mandarina Bavaria from Germany. Expect hints of orange peel and toasted corn that complement the dry and snappy finish.
Living Haus Margie Lee
5.6% ABV
Margie Lee, an “Upper West Coast Pilsner,” is a collaboration with Holy Mountain Brewing founder and Head Brewer Colin Lenfesty. This lager is their collective take on a hop forward pilsner that showcases one of the most elegant hops grown in the upper West Coast region, Citra. In fact, this pilsner is exclusively hopped with Citra hop products — from the boil through the dry hop process — for passionfruit, mango, and lychee in every sip and sniff. Margie Lee McDavitt was Colin’s maternal grandmother. “She grew up in the middle of Oklahoma in the ’30s, smack dab in the middle of the Dust Bowl, to say she was tough and resilient is an understatement,” states Lenfesty. “Her kindness, enormous heart and love for her family was unwavering, as was her encouragement to her grandson to follow his dreams.”
Living Haus Carl
6.3% ABV
Citra has been an IPA brewer’s favorite for the past decade but surprisingly it’s only been available since 2007. It was the catalyst that changed the flavor profile of the IPA. Before the bright citrus character came along most brewers were using hops with pine and grassy characteristics which as you can imagine would not make a great juicy IPA but worked well for the classic West Coast IPA style. Adding Amarillo helps the Citra from being too Citra-y. Brewed with Ruse Brewing, Living Haus Carl uses both breweries’ hop lots of Citra and Amarillo in this classic west coast IPA.
Living Haus Winnie Cooper
7% ABV
Winnie Cooper is a West Coast IPA starring Mosaic, which is one of the first hops Conrad, Mat and Gavin fell in love with when they were young brewers. With a little help from her friends Simcoe and Vic Secret, this IPA has captured all the things they wanted out of these hops: Strawberries, peach, white grape, and guava on the nose and in the finish. It has a bit of a juicy feel to it with a solid bitter finish.
Living Haus Caterina
10% ABV
A collaboration with Brujos Brewing, a Portland brewery that adores, heavy metal, the occult, and pastry and barrel-aged stouts, helps Living Haus dump multiple pounds of Madagascar vanilla beans and freshly roasted Mexico El Acido coffee beans into the making of this imperial stout with coffee and dark chocolate aromas up front followed by tastes of marshmallow, cherry, creamy vanilla, figs, and molasses.
