West Olympia letter carrier, botanist, and homebrewer Patrick Jansen met Darby’s Café owners Nate and Sara Reilly at the Helsing Junction music and sleepover festival, and the three opened Three Magnets Brewing in 2014. In June 2017, Jansen and Grant Bolt — a bartender at Three Magnets and founder of WortWorks Soda Co. — opened Matchless Brewing Co. near the Olympia Regional Airport in Tumwater. With Grant as president and Jansen as director of brewing operations, the duo began cranking out award-winning craft beer in a 9,000-square-foot brewery and taproom. Jansen eventually left, and environmental scientist turned Redhook brewmaster Nick Crandall into Matchless’ head brewer, brewing Jansen’s popular beers and his treasures until November 2023. Matchless has been named one of the Best New Breweries in the World by BeerAdvocate, featured as one of the Best Beers in Washington by Seattle Magazine, and a frequent medalist at the Washington Beer Awards. Matchless Joost Juicy IPA

6.5% ABV

Hazy IPA brewed with Pilsner malt, malted wheat, and flaked oats, plus Motueka, Azacca, Mosaic, and Idaho 7 hops, for notes of orange, tangerine, papaya, grapefruit, and pineapple.

Matchless Super Fluff

8.3% ABV

Sometimes, it’s best to let Matchless Brewing talk: “I’m not like regular All Fluff. I’m a Super Fluff. Super Fluff. I’m super fluffyyyy. Because it’s a very fluffy beer. Matchless Matchless Bar 2025

This year’s annual release of its decadent imperial chocolate stout was aged in Westward Whiskey barrels and blended with vanilla beans and cocoa nibs. As the name suggests, this is what the brewery imagines the chocolate river in Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory would have tasted like … if it were made of chocolate beer.

Matchless Ol’ Lifewine 2023

15% ABV

Matchless Brewing’s 2023 Ol’ Lifewine release is a blend of English-style barleywines, handpicked from their barrel library, aged exclusively in fresh Westward Whiskey barrels. These barrels add aromas of smooth whiskey, dried fruit, and warm oak. A blend of Maris Otter, Amber, and Brown malts and just a touch of smoked malt creates a rich palate of candied fig, toffee, and pecan pie.
