Pretty Gritty Tours founder and Foster’s Creative “ten of us” 2023 honoree Chris Staudinger takes walkers on a historic tour of Tacoma’s beloved Proctor District as part of Peaks & Pints Tacoma Beer Week 2024 celebration today. After a couple pints of Narrows Brewing beer, around 6 p.m., Staudinger will take folks on a historical tour of the Proctor District, which is named after Ontario-born architect John G. Proctor who designed many local historical treasures, including the Pierce County Courthouse (1892), the Nelson Bennet Mansion (1889) and the Wheeler Building (1889). Staudinger will discuss architect Proctor, the 100-year-old oak tree at Wheelock Public Library, the historic Mason Plaza and its Star of Destiny, The Blue Mouse Theatre, and other historic landmarks in the Proctor neighborhood. Peaks & Pints will host the Pretty Gritty Tours group before and after the tour with a Narrows Brewing tap takeover — including the return of Narrows’ Proctor Pale, which Staudinger and Peaks & Pints co-owner Ron Swarner helped brew. In conjunction, Peaks & Pints presents an all-day flight of Narrows beers — a flight we’re calling Peaks and Pints Beer Flight: Narrows Proctorlandia.
Peaks and Pints Beer Flight: Narrows Proctorlandia
Narrows Fruit of the Lagoon
5.5% ABV
Tacoma Beer Week paired five Browns Point Homebrewers Club members’ recipes with Tacoma professional brewers to collaborate on five different beers for the first ever Tacoma Beer Week ProAm Competition. Emma Hibbs, Kelvin Keown, Scott Howell, Tristan McCoy, and Troy Wormsbecker and E9 Brewing, Narrows Brewing, Odd Otter Brewing, Sig Brewing, and North 47 Brewing converged on the Parkway Tavern Sunday, Aug. 11 to be tapped, tasted, and judged to crown the “Best in Show” and “Crowd Favorite” winners for the inaugural Tacoma Beer Week ProAm Competition. Keown and Narrows Brewing took second with their Fruit of the Lagoon traditional gose.
Narrows Proctor DDH Hazy Pale Ale
5.7% ABV
As mentioned in this flight’s introduction, Chris Staudinger of Pretty Gritty Tours and Ron Swarner of Peaks & Pints spent a day at Narrows brewing a new batch of Proctor DDH Hazy Pale Ale, which has been on hiatus for a few years. Narrows Production Manager A.J. led Staudinger and Swarner through the brewing process on the brewery’s small, experimental system creating a hop forward pale ale with a double dry hopping of Citra and a pale malt base. Expect aromas of grapefruit and passionfruit, and a bready lighter bodied finish.
Narrows Queen Octo Hazy IPA
6.5% ABV
Brewed with Nelson Sauvin, Columbus, Ekuanot, Citra, and Mosaic hops, Queen Octo is a more complex hazy IPA brewed with multiple new methods for adding hops — specifically Nelson Sauvin and Phantasm powder. The result is a super juicy IPA with strong passionfruit and peach aromas, followed by notes of strawberry and citrus.
Narrows Jetmate West Coast IPA
7.2% ABV
Inspired by a side-by-side jet ski, this West Coast IPA is brewed with Simcoe, Chinook, and Mosaic hops for floral and piney hop notes, mellow bitterness, and a tiny bit of sweetness.
High Tide Hazy DIPA
9.3% ABV
This hazy, tropical double IPA is a juicy explosion of guava and passionfruit flavors crafted with Columbus, Cashmere, and El Dorado hops.
