During the pandemic, Conrad Andrus left his five-year brewing job at Culmination Brewing to join head brewer Mat Sandoval at Modern Times Beer’s Belmont Fermentorium, a Portland location for the San Diego brewery. After Modern Times in Portland shutdown in February 2022, Andrus and Sandoval opened Living Haus Beer Co. in the shuttered Belmont Fermentorium with former pFriem Family Brewers’ Head Brewer Gavin Lord joining the partnership. The Living Haus trio transformed the space into a sleek, modern brewery and taproom while keeping the building’s character, which dates to the 1930s. Today, Peaks & Pints presents a to-go flight of Living Haus beer brewed by three exceptional brewers and named after their family members — a flight we call Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Living Haus Flight.
Peaks and Pints Pilot Program: Living Haus Flight
Living Haus Dusty
5.2% ABV
Living Haus’ Dusty has toasted bread notes from a rigorous step mashing process using Weyermann Vienna malt and a touch of Canadian grown pilsner malt. They layer in German-grown Hersbrucker and Tettnang creating a gentle hop expression of geranium and black tea. Expect sweet malt, light roast, and a touch of bready and floral notes.
Living Haus Joyleen
5.5% ABV
Living Haus’ take on a traditional German hefeweizen blended wheat malt and their house pilsner malt with a touch of Hallertau Mittelfruh hops before fermenting the beer with a Bavarian Weizen yeast strain. All the classic characters are on display with a balanced profile of banana and clove spices from the nose to the finish. The wheat provides a full-bodied mouthfeel while the high carbonation provides a snappy acidity that rounds out the finish.
Living Haus My Father’s Pilsner
6.5% ABV
Collaboration with two new Oregon breweries — Grand Fir Brewing with Brewmaster Whitney Burnside and Obelisk Beer Co. — My Father’s Pilsner is a hop-forward West Coast pilsner brewed with Citra cryo, hand selected Strata, Hallertau Mittlefruh and US grown Tettnang hops to lay a slightly earthy aroma base before the aroma hops were added to the dry hop. Pilsner malt along with a dash of Isaria 1924 and a smidge of flaked oats balance this beer with raspberry, peach-o rings, candied strawberry, and light herbal notes.
Living Haus Pearl
6.5% ABV
Brewed with Stigbergets Bryggeri in Göteborg, Sweden, this coffee stout is brewed with a complex array of crystal, chocolate, and roasted malts with malted and golden naked oats to create a full bodied yet quaffable base stout that’s layered in Sumatran Puju coffee from Portland’s Puff Coffee plus a touch of Madagascar vanilla.
