Avalanches, like weather, are the subject of books, classes, studies and frequent monitoring in Washington state’s mountainous regions. There are no simple rules that can tell you which slope might wipe you out, but a few things can help you understand avalanches and mitigate your risk. Most avalanches occur on slopes steeper than 30 degrees. Avalanche risk is greatest within the 24 hours after a storm drops 12 or more inches of snow.
